You can tell by the scoreline what an exciting game this was. Driff 41 - Alnwick 39. The last conversion of the game winning the match. Alnwick held the lead for the majority of the match and always looked like scoring when in the Driff22 which was often. Their fly half was excellent with distribution and later with clever kicking. They showed that after their long journey they were not settling for anything but a win, and they so nearly achieved that.
Driff kept pulling back the scores to a closer match, every time Alnwick appeared to be away. And near the end Driff appeared to be sufficiently ahead the win the game, but Alnwick came back to lead which brought us to the final excitement when Driff seized their opportunity to win. Dinsdale and Falkingham were outstanding for Driff.
You could see how disappointed Alnwick were at the final whistle, and they must take great credit, as must Driff, for the amount of hard tackling done throughout the match. Again good refereeing was on show.

Only four 're-arranged games this weekend. Here goes.
Cleck v York. Tough game to judge. Cleck to come back after last week? Against York will be a tough ask. Depends on what teams can be turned out. I will take a York close win!
Driff v Scunthorpe. This should be a good Driff win, but we must expect Scuny
to be making big effort to avoid relegation and they scored plenty of points away at Alnwick last week. Hope for bonus win for Diff.
Heath v Sandal. Sandal much improved, but have to take Heath at home and wanting to keep pressure on Billingham.
Ilkley v Paviors. Only one winner here. Ilkley with bonus.

Herewith my views on above Saturday. Likely to be some wet grounds except at Billingham.

Alnwick. V Sandal.. Seems a sure home win.
Cleck v DP. This is a tough one, especially after DP's good home win last week. I will go for home narrow win.
Scunthorpe v Paviors. Another close one. Take home win.
West Bridgford v Ilkley. Think Ilkley will win easily, especially if WB have to play at Derby univ pitch.
York v Heath. M of the day. It would be good if York can cause an upset, but take Heath closely.
Billingham v Driff. As much as I hope to watch a Driff win, it will have to be a great effort to do so. Bill  had a surprise loss last week and will want to put matters right. Therefore I fear a home win.

My forecasts are as follows - with not a lot of confidence.

Heath v Sandal . Have to take a home win if they play to their potential.
Billingham v Alnwick. The game of the round. One must expect a very close game but I think home win.
Cleck v York. This will also be tight. Draw
DP v West Bridgeford. Home win
Ilkley v Paviors. This must surely be a home win. Ilkley far too good a side to continue near bottom of league.
Driffield v Scunthorpe. Must be a home win. But they will have to play better than last week against a side desperate for a win.

My forecasting up to now has been poor. I shall have another go!
Alnwick v Driffield. The dreaded journey! I would like to think Driff can get a good result, the spirit is there but it is an awesome ask. I will support Driff with a win.
Billingham v Paviors. Home win with BP.
Cleckheaton v Ilkley. After last week's great win, I have to take Cleck and win without a BP.
Doncaster P v Heath. Having seen DP last week, I am sure Heath will get their show on the road again after Cleck dealt with them last Saturday. BP win.
WB v Scunthorpe. I think this will be close, but will go for a home win without BP.
York v Sandal. I keep thinking York will go on a run. Sandal seem to be improving. Home win without BP.

I will start it off.
Driff v DP. Home win
Heath v Cleck. I have not seen Heath, but I expect they are good inspite of last week's result. I think Cleck will lose by a small margin.
Ilkley v Billingham. I have to go with Bill, having seen them and note they are a very organised side with a big, fit pack. I realise Ilkley have good backs, but will they get enough ball. Not enough to win I am afraid.
Paviors v York. Difficult as I only saw Paviors first game of season and they may have improved. Surely York will start firing soon. Away win.
Sandal v West B. I am tempted by home win, but WB seem to be improving. What about a draw. I know that is chickening out!
Scun v  Alnwick. Will this long trip for Alnwick take its toll. Just Alnwick.
I am not too confident on some of those predictions and my record so far has been lamentable

Regional One (North East) / Round 4

Cleck v Billingham. Two teams I forecast to win last week and both lost! I take Cleck to win closely at home.
DP v York. Another tricky one. Home win.
Driff v West B. On the records up to now, must be an easy home win.
Heath v Scunthorpe. Having seen Scunthorpe last week, they will be smarting with their poor start. Heath win
Ilkley v Sandal. must be a home win, although Ilkley havent got into their proper stride yet.
Paviors v Alnwick. Big away win.

Regional Two (North & North East) / Results 18th Dec

Driff 17 Malton 10. Both teams had men off. Malton dominated scrums so Drif short of possession. Drif tackling secured the win through stout defence. 2 tries to 1. Played in excellent spirit. Both teams look as though they need a good rest! Come back hopefully refreshed in 2022 providing covid quietens down.

Referee Chat / Referee calling at tackle situation
« on: November 22, 2021, 07:19:45 PM »
Could one of the referee experts please explain the situation when a play is held by an opponent. Sometimes the ref says tackle and enforces the tackler to release before the tackled player is on the floor. Other times he calls maul and if the tackled player does not go to ground the ball is given to the opposition at the ensuing scrum. How does the referee decide which route to take?
