No point crowing about the junior section and ladies team if you can't turn out more than one mens team.
Why not - how do you grow the game as a whole? Are you basing the success of a 'grassroots club' only on how many senior mens sides they put out? That attitude belongs back when all clubs could put 4 teams out on a Saturday.

Im a mere minion involved with Ilkley 3's, but Ive seen enough to know that ultimately it's how a club operates that dictates the success in number of XV's it puts out on a Saturday. Yeah you've got your ego's that don't want to play 2XV rugby let alone 3XV but I do believe its about re educating these prima donna's and if they can't be educated there is the door.

To go from 3/4 teams at Harrogate and Otley down to 1 highlights a problem in my opinion. York aren't far behind as they are now down to 2 sides I believe? Given the population of Harrogate, Otley and York they should be leading the way with sides.
I don't know when the Harrogate has 3 or 4 senior teams on a Saturday - not in the last 25 years at least. Unless you're including the Pythons who ran a separate set up

Around 2012 they did try to get a third team up and running, but were totally stretched numbers wise, so were turning up to games with under 15 players which is never sustainable

You then look to sides like Moortown, Leos, North Ribb and ourselves at Ilkley who are all knocking out 3 sides it doesn't take a genius to work out that the culture is right..

I suppose the offer of unlimited free kit, free bar at the end of season do, free tweed, cheeseboards on away day coaches,  numerous benefactors chucking money into the clubhouse, gym, sauna etc will help with a clubs culture.....

One thing that impresses me is the ability of East Yorks sides to put out 4 sides...Scarbs and Driff take a bow.

Money will always be thrown about at all levels, we've lost players to promises of beer money (yes a 3XV losing players to sides in the vicinity)

If you've only one side how do you expect to retain players or have somewhere for them to return to when back from uni? If you're happy sitting on one senior mens side good luck.

I wouldn't know about tweed and cheese boards being in the 3's old boy.

Happy new ears .. well to all you gargoyle front five fat folk anyways ..

few new years honours I reckon from the first half of the season …

For services to traditional community rugger, Alnwick, Cleck, Heath, Ilkey, Driff, Scunny, Ponty

Lack of environmental awareness award to Blaydon for their Hydrocarbon heap of garbage

Poor ideology and awareness in grass roots rugby certificates to Gate, Donny, Blaydon

Services to communication medal to Mr G S Height of Heath, mention in despatches to the skinny weasel at Donny on the wing who kicks , man he’s got some rattle and bad attitude .

Heroes in need of help awards to everyone of our amazing referees … Sirs I for one applaud you all 👏especially  the Ref ( sorry don’t know your name ) at Cleckheaton against Ponty in the monsoon …outstanding performance .

For Services to Rugby .. everyone who turns up every week in whatever capacity to actually keep our sport alive . ( except Sandal obvs … Poshnackers Huppars and the snotgoblins have enough privileges for us all )

Now to the games

York , Heath, Driff , Alnwick , Ilkey and draw at Cleck

You mean Harrogate that have 500 junior players, colts, girls and a ladies side?

Shame really another club obsessed with the 1XV, same as Otley. it does the club no favours in the long run.

Happy New Year to you up in the Dale Ribbflagman.

One of the last proper clubs in my opinion and a great place to visit and cross swords. This board is a great place to communicate but sadly I believe clubs try to stop posters now as you can see it going off a club.

Ill be here till the end.

Merit Leagues / Referee needed
« on: December 14, 2023, 08:27:43 PM »
Just had an email advising our referee is needed elsewhere at a higher level game so we are apparently one of 3 games needing a ref this weekend.

Ilkley 3’s v Leo’s 2’s

Anyone know of anyone free hit me up. Will pay in warm food, drink and expenses bonus includes lancashire banter.

As someone that's played at Castleford years ago and currently sponsors a player down there I find it mental to read this.

Clearly the place hasn't learnt it's lessons listening to rumblings lately and Pom would appear to be right.

Pleasure as always Flaggy, had to shoot at half time due to the trains being cancelled.

I thought the writing was on the wall looking at the size of your lads the first half, it was a great watch. To my understanding you had too much in the tank as the 2nd half wore on and ran out worthy winners. A worthy adversary to lose to.

Lads were absolutely loving the after match food!

Long time Kronos hope you are well?

I know a couple of their guys from years ago......I don't think you could shock me here.

Not defending Moortown here but they certainly don't have a problem taking the mick out of themselves on social media when they lose.

Given how good their 2's and 3's are you'd have thought they could have thrown something together if they have availability issues?

I believe there is a FB group already running that does this for Yorkshire?

Last time I went to one of those meetings was before covid hosted by Old Brods and chaired by Andy Fradgley and Dave Towler if I’m not mistaken.

It was one of those we will take your opinions on board when we ask for them…I’ll never forget them rolling their eyes as soon as the suggestions started coming forth. I knew then I’d wasted my night.

Things soon liven up when the free drinks were offered up.

As to what can be done?Cave in the merit league put all those competitive that are left into the league above and split it into two.

Or as Ribb says small local leagues with perhaps a grand final.

I'll start off with a positive, despite only having 10 players Burley turned up and we leant them our bench to make it 14v14 with reduced game time of an hour. We've built up a decent relationship with them and helped them last season get a side out when they needed help with numbers. One of a few sides who rely on students.

However Ribbflagman I can only agree with you looking to the future. Im finding the whole process frustrating now with rugby consuming more and more of my time during the week. That's getting a side together (what's new) to chasing fixture secretary's to gauge as early as possible if we have a game or not. Last season I took on the role of arranging fixtures for the 3's due to not having a secretary and I did the same this season. I was given assurances by some of my contacts despite not fielding a 2's for years that they would absolutely be fielding a side this year. West Park being an example, week before the game I went down to watch the Tykes and whilst ordering a drink told the bar man we would be playing them the following week and looking forward to it. He laughed. Unsurprisingly after chasing the secretary they didn't have the players.Great.

We managed to get a last minute game against Leo's who too were playing another phantom 2's side Bradford Salem. The drama didn't end here either after asking to keep the ref we supposedly had for our league game we then found out we didn't have one due to the massive shortage of referee's now facing the game. Scratching around we found an ex player to do it.

This Saturday just gone wasn't without drama as I say low playing numbers and again no referee resulted in calls going out far and wide where we convinced a local ref to cancel his weekend off. Massively indebted to him for that. Hope he found his car keys.

I find Duncan one of the best to deal with up at yours Flaggy and have arranged 4 games with yourselves with one of them being our annual coach allowance. The other fixture we are pooling cars and Im personally having to throw money in to cover fuel. All for the love of the game.

Im under massive pressure to make sure we get our home games on due to being the only side at home on those days as our 2's now follow the 1's for near on every game. So understand the bar takings angle as well.

I think the game in general in this country is now going to go through a massive period of change and that will result in more clubs going to the wall.

I know there are those who will argue they arrange the fixtures in hope or good faith they will get a side out but it is frustrating to be on the receiving end of it.

Im looking at our fixture list nervously and already seeing Roundhegians have only played one of their last four games as well conceding home fixtures...

Bit harsh on Malton... I'd have them in my dream league. Good people and normally put out three teams..

Like ourselves at Ilkley. Considering bringing our 3's over this season if we can make it work.
