Yorkshire 3 / Re: Who’s going down?
« on: May 16, 2023, 12:32:48 PM »
Well... after all that it looks like Thorne will be joining us and Leeds Medics in the doldrums of Yorkshire 4 now. Good old Yorkshire RFU at it again eh?! Be some angry men in Thorne today I suspect.

After a few days to stew on it I'm gutted we have ended up going down after such a promising start to the season, but when you can't keep even remotely the same team on the field from one week to the next it's always going to be difficult to build some kind of team understanding over the season and it showed in the end. At the end of the day you can only p*** with the c*** you've got! We've been hit by several of our first team regulars either retiring through injury this season or lads just losing the love for the game and giving it up for work commitments, though I think most clubs probably encounter this but we just haven't had any other players coming through to replace them with. That's where teams who just have a first team can get caught out if you don't have a big enough squad.

Unfortunately, like most clubs and in fact most sports we have slowly seen player numbers going further down season after season for the past 5 years and struggled to find many interested younger lads to give the game a go to replace the aging bodies. But being in the rugby league corridor we tend to find most young available lads prefer to go to league, as union has become that technical and complicated it's quite unattractive to most and league is what they know so usually what they choose. We as a club have actively tried to do something about the fact we have no youth development and our current captain Mr Mattin started a rugby league set up a couple of years ago, which now has 4 teams playing out of the club including a girls team which is fantastic to see. We are hoping in the long run that as these younger players progress we can transition them in to playing union for the club.

As for the here and now it's not all been doom and gloom and we have managed to recruit some great new young lads who are excited to play and train so hopefully we can build on this and create a settled, regular team next year that can go out and enjoy themselves every week as opposed to limping through fixtures week after week for a whole season.

All the best to everyone in Yorkshire 3 for next season, hopefully we as a club have a few more seasons left in us yet and we might see you again in a few years.

I think the major issue has been the forum website completely changing, I know a fair few now who don't know how to use it or struggle to navigate through it so now don't bother going on.

Ribbflaggy, I’ll try to give the most honest answer I can on this.

As a Knottingley lad that’s played for the last 12 years from Yorkshire 1 when I was 17 to where we are now there’s not one specific issue I’d say I could pin this on but a mixture of a few.

The glaring one is that we struggle to keep the same side on the pitch every week and dare I say we’ve not had the same line up all year due to most of the team working consistent shifts and weekends throughout the season, it is what it is. Also we’ve noticed a massive drop in interest in union in general only to be further compounded by the idiots at the top with the latest law changes. You only have to look at participation numbers in union to have a stark reminder of where this sport is heading.

Then combine that with a rugby league area where you’re having to battle with various local league teams to even keep players if we do manage to persuade them to come give it a go. That mixed in with being a small town, 1 team club surrounded by other union clubs and a lack of a junior sections was inevitably going to catch up with us at some point. We have also lost alot of first team regulars to long term injuries/retirement including myself which has also added to the task.

Fingers crossed I’m wrong but if something doesn’t change soon I fear for the fate of a lot of smaller community clubs, the writing seems to be on the wall.

That’s that then. It’s been a blast while it lasted. 19/01/23 the day the final nail went in the coffin. It’s that bad of a rule change I hear they’re also changing it to 5 players a side as that’s how many you’ll end up with anyway once the rules implemented.

Didn't manage to post at the weekend as I was quite busy, but must say Skipton well worth their win and will give anyone a game if they can take that pack with them every week. Some absolute beasts in their forwards compared to the fixture earlier in the season, most notably a big South African prop who kept tramming it up all day with some power and kept them on the front foot in scrum time and over the gain line, which effectively killed us all game mixed in with our sloppy mistakes. We looked like a team that hadn't played for 6 weeks and it showed unfortunately. Good luck to Skipton for the rest of the season.

Happy new year one and all in Yorkshire 3. You never know how teams will perform after Christmas and quite a decent break off with the weather so it's a guessing game at this point.

Castleford vs Thirsk - Cas' pitch is boggy at the best of times, think it might slow the Thirsk lads down enough for a close home win especially if they've had too many mince pies.
Vandals vs Burley - Vandals are like pigs in s*** on mount doom, will be a slog but Vandals to edge it. Not the pitch you wanna be on after a long Christmas break.
Hemsworth vs Leeds Meds - Hemsworth to keep up their unbeaten run at home to the students who might not even be back off their jollies yet.
Knottingley vs Skipton - Hopefully these few weeks of rest have done us well and we can get back to enjoying it again. Skipton always come for a tough tear up and I doubt tomorrow will be any different, looking forward to it.
Ossett vs Sheffield Meds - Ossett seem to be the dark horses this year tallying up those wins week after week, they must be doing summat rate. Again depends how many of the doctors have returned from the Alps from their weeks of chalet's and skiing.
West Park Leeds vs Thorne - A real battle of the classes here, posh boys vs the wukin men who will prevail?! Hopefully Thorne nick one for the working man but I can't see it at West Park England.

Good luck all.

Yorkshire 3 / Referee needed - Knottingley New Years Day Fixture
« on: December 28, 2022, 04:07:00 PM »
Hi all, we’re having a New Years Day game with past and present players and require a referee. If anyone would be interested please let me know.

Leeds Meds v Burley - Bit of a local derby, I’ll give Meds a fighting chance at home they’re an entertaining team.

Ossett v WPL - Ossett consistently racking wins up now think they’ll have enough against the posh boys on the side wards slope.

Sheff Meds v Hemsworth - Everytime I back Shmeds they let me down and Hemsworth were solid last week with some big boppers in the middle. Hems to keep on rolling.

Skipton v Halifax Vandals - Skipton seem to have turned a corner after their walkover a few weeks back and they’re always a challenge at home.

Thirsk v Knottingley - Gutted we’ve had to give the game as we had a bus trip booked too but with 1 of 6 front rowers available it’s impossible to do anything with that. If anyone knows of any trees that grow props let us know.

Thorne v Cas - Could be a tight gritty affair but I think Cas should edge it.

As expected another brutally physical game yesterday against Hemsworth in a tense local derby, feel like I’ve been hit by a bus! Not sure how we managed to lose that game but we did, leading for 75 minutes but Hemsworth showed why they’re top and unbeaten with a late try in the last 5 minutes from Joe their centre who scored all 3 of their tries. A shame that we couldn’t close the game out and get back to winning ways but a lot of positives to take from it. Great crack after the game too with the Hemsworth lads as always and we look forward to seeing you back at our place fellas for a pint or 3.

Wasn’t at the game yesterday but I’m told on good authority the lads are 100% blaming Halifax for Halifax beating us. Hope they can sleep at night!

Knottingley V Halifax Vandals - Away again today on an international peacemaking mission to Lancashire. Fingers crossed the lads can do the job and get back to winning ways after last few weeks disappointing results.

Ossett V Castleford - Should be a tight one but Ossett to edge it at home but Cas will push them close.

Sheffield Medicals V Burley - Sheff struggling to find a win at the minute. Burley should have enough.

Skipton V Leeds Medics and Dentists - Skipton resurgent after their crisis talks, the Medics will be slowed down in the thick Skipton mud.

Thornensians V Thirsk - Thorne picking up but still think Thirsk have enough to get the win.

West Park Leeds V Hemsworth - Hemsworth to keep on rolling at the top against West Park England.

Good local derby game against Cas today and the ref deserves a mention too best we’ve had this season. Cas took their chances well and punished some of our sloppy mistakes and it cost us in the end. We were in front for most of the game right up to the last 10 minutes, we had the chances to put the game away at various points but that’s rugby! Just on another note I’d like to thank Cas for donating the whip round they had last year for our lad Billy who sadly passed away too it’s appreciated by everyone at Knottingley, rivalries aside rugby is one big family. Look forward to the return leg at our place.
