Yorkshire 2 / Pre-Season Friendlies
« on: July 15, 2024, 02:02:34 PM »
Ripon now have a full pre-season schedule with an eclectic mix of Harrogate Pythons and Thirsk to keep the local vibe going and a testimonial v Barnard Castle for our lad who broke his neck in the PJC semi final - a former pupil of the school and club member. Who I might add, is doing well and joining the Ripon coaching team.

What's everyone else up to?

Niners - our chap, who came to us from HLH two seasons ago has landed a dream job with a club in Hong Kong. As a professional sports analyst (he was inspirational in Ripon's pre-match research and preparation), he was tapped up to go and do same over there, so will be playing, coaching and analysing. Tough gig in that heat!

Interesting that Vannie, have they been previously formed and absent for a while, or a new set up?

Ossie - I believe your 1s and 2s are coming over to Ripon together for a gentle soiree, so if you're on the bus, will ensure hospitality.

No offence intended Smashie, in a list of 12 someone has to come bottom and everyone entitled to their opinion. Once I got to the lower half of the table I just had a wild stab to be honest.

I echo Flaggy's comment about Ossett's hospitality and competitiveness and looking forward to making the away trip this coming season as I couldn't last.

A terrifying prospect that bots could do that. Can any of them play Rugby do you think?

Love you too Flaggy!

Interesting commentary about comings and goings. Keep it up. Be good to see where Bees are fishing and hopefully if they are splashing the cash, it's worth it for them. Doesn't seem to have been too successful a strategy up to now though?

Predictions and other debate on placings welcome, as will likely contributors and contenders for next season's weekly league predictions.

Ripon looking at a largely recycled squad from last season with some Colts stepping up full time. Pre-season starts next week, so see who rucks up. Beer festival tomorrow, so another good recruiting event, as long as everyone can remember which club they were at.

Founding father with Gary Smith. Was first club captain and coach in opening season1994 when I first moved up here and first junior section chair from 2004. Happy days starting a club from scratch!

Looks pretty open but for different reasons, would like to see Barnsley getting back up on their feet again and as a founder member, think Thirsk could be dark horses and would love to see them doing better.

Looking forward to rekindling old relationships and forging some new in what promises to be just as intense a season as the last couple. Predictions for finishing positions:

1   Ripon - despite losing Player Coach to pastures new and first choice 10 to career ending injury, this still young squad has the appetite, attitude and ability to go further.
2   Yarnbury - they will keep the try BP machine ticking over in their home games and do enough on the road to be in contention.
3   Roundhegians - sleeping giants to wake up and gain some consistent form.
4   Baildon - been close contenders for a couple of years and cash or not, will have the appetite to keep up the table.
5   Bradford & Bingley - may be sticking my neck out with this unknown quantity but think they will need a season of stability to stop the rot and consolidate before bidding for glory again.
6   Huddersfield Laund Hill - here significant departure(s) may have a negative effect. May have to settle for mid-table mediocrity despite being a "proper Rugby Club" and a good place to visit.
7   Halifax Vandals - Yorkshire 3 form a different kettle of fish from Y2 and need to be able to step up quickly, so a year for consolidation.
8   Northallerton - as above, they have seen pendulum success and less so over past few seasons and may need a good solid season to get used to the higher standard again.
9   Dinnington - some quality individual players don't make a great team and so can't see them ending up much different from last season.
10 Bramley Phoenix - home power will just about keep them out of trouble but not sure how long they can keep up the "just made it" performance?
11 Hemsworth - Yorkshire 2 showed as a step to far and it can't have been fun being on the receiving end of so many one sided games.
12 Ossett - similar to Hems, don't think they have what it takes personnel wise to build a sustainable threat in this division.

Other views and challenges welcome.

Aiming for Twickers next year!

Having an arranged match cancelled, Ripon are seeking a potential pre-season warm up match on Saturday 24th August against opposition from Y1 or R2NE. Looking at a cup tie sized 1st XV squad (22ish players) and prepared to travel. Any interest in principle back to me in the first instance and I can connect to right people at my end.

Ashbourne 14 - 31 Ripon. When all is said and done, there's nothing quite like the feeling of winning something after a hard slog of a season and a lot of effort on behalf of the players, coaches, volunteers and supporters. Certainly a grand day out for Ripon and not wanting to sound ungrateful - hats off to RFU for securing the venue after what I understand was a challenge, the Darlington Arena could do with a bit more than a lick of paint. Correspondents on here bemoan the practice of investing in players rather than facilities and infrastructure, DMP have got a heck of a job on their hands to keep that place up.
