New book in stock from 8th September 2021. £7.99 plus postage and packing- available from: ypdbooks.com 01904 431213.

The book chronicles some of the events and changes that took place in Yorkshire rugby union over a period of time that included the austerity of the 1930s and the catastrophe of a World War.
Following World War Two rugby union gradually involved into a mass participation sport that was accessible to anyone  willing to put on playing kit, a pair of boots and step onto a rugby field.

On 2nd September 1939 Baildon organised a 7s. Unfortunately, only three teams were able to take part. Baildon, Baildon 'A" and Bingley, the teams played 11 a side. The announcement at 11.00 am on 3rd September 1939 of the start of WW2 massively affected rugby in Yorkshire for the next six years. If you want to know what happened read 'Let Them Play By All Means' Available from ypdbooks.com

As a young player about 21 I played for North Ribb 2s against Chirons. From memory it was played on Soldiers Fields Roundhay and we won 10 - 9 and there was an old tin bath to get washed in.
Happy days.
Some of my best days with Chirons were when we played North Ribb away. The club often took both teams to Settle with the 'A' team playing at Giggleswick. After the games the evening became a bit of a blur.
The bath in Chirons changing rooms was in fact lead lined and I believe, in the late 1970s when one of the members realised the potential health hazard, the lead was removed and the bath tiled.

Did Castleford ever play against Chiron?
Chirons had fixtures against Castleford, from memory off and on right up to the 1980s. If you follow the link you can find some of the fixtures and results. In the 80s when Chirons played mainly junior teams, I was able to fill in a few gaps from the Pont&Cas Express.

Interesting read!  Just checked, sadly, it looks like the season Chiron were finally to play Old Grovians (original incarnation in the  60's) coincided with the season they folded.   the following season Chiron played against aireobrians (Aire grammar school old boys) who were set up to replace old grovians and take on their fixtures I'm led to believe.

I am glad you found 'A Forgotten Rugby Club' interesting. As you will have noticed the fixtures and results in the 1980s are, to say the least, a bit patchy. The club was struggling and because of that and the start of the leagues it proved very difficult to find fixtures and results. Which, I suppose means that Chirons may have played Old Grovians but I couldn't find the fixture. I understand that the club often arranged fixtures at the last minute through the clearing house. Waiting until they were sure they could find enough players before agreeing to a game. A sad decline from the 1960s and 1970s when Chirons had regular fixtures against clubs now operating in Yorkshire 1 and above.

If you have never heard of Leeds Chirons you might be surprised to find that your club had fixtures against them. If you follow the link below it should take you to free download in which I have recorded the club's fixtures and most of the results going back to the 1920s.

If you are interested in knowing more about the club my book about Leeds Chirons is called Leeds Who? Available from www.ypdbooks.com

Barnsley 15 Bradford Salem 31. A good game, Barnsley were very competitive but Salem kept the ball alive and their fast backs did the damage in the second half.

Barnsley 20 West Leeds 30. A much better performance from Barnsley saw them lead by 20 points to 9 will 20 minutes to go. West Leeds fought back well and 21 unanswered points saw them seal the victory.

Barnsley 16 Keighley 12. A pretty dour game played on a very muddy pitch. Keighley could have snatched in in the final 10 minutes when they put great pressure on the Barnsley line. Barnsley's excellent defence probably won them the game.

I put this article on my blog www.dropkickbooks.co.uk in 2011. A few changes since and quite a lot in the last 44 years!

1969/70 was my first season at Barnsley and when I recently looked at the fixture list for that season I was struck by how things have changed in rugby union over the past 40 years. Exactly why some clubs have disappeared, while others have improved their status and still another group has declined is hard to explain. Was the reason the impact of leagues, professionalism or the increasing range of leisure activities available? Notably, rugby union has suffered a decline in playing numbers. Clubs that once organised four or five teams now only organise two or three. Players can now move freely between the two codes but that hasn’t had a significant impact on player numbers.
The reality is that the reasons for the changes are complex. There isn’t just one reason for clubs disappearing, improving their status or declining. I have listed below the clubs that were in the 1969/70 Barnsley fixture list, the name they go by today and, if they are still in existence, which league they are in.

The situation as it was in 2011/12

HEATH OLD BOYS, HEATH RUFC, NORTH ONE EAST

YORKSHIRE COPPER WORKS, NO LONGER IN EXISTENCE

ROTHERHAM, ROTHERHAM TITANS, THE CHAMPIONSHIP

BRAMLEY BARBARIANS, BRAMLEY PHOENIX, YORKSHIRE THREE

RODILLIANS, STANLEY RODILLIANS, YORKSHIRE FOUR

STOCKSBRIDGE, YORKSHIRE FIVE

LEEDS CHIRONS, NO LONGER IN EXISTENCE

SHEFFIELD TIGERS, NATIONAL LEAGUE 2 (NORTH)

WEST PARK OLD BOYS, WEST PARK LEEDS, YORKSHIRE TWO

BEVERLEY, NATIONAL LEAGUE 3 (NORTH)

OLD WATHONIANS, WATH UPON DEARNE, YORKSHIRE TWO

YARNBURY, YORKSHIRE TWO

HUDDERSFIELD YMCA, YORKSHIRE ONE

CLECKHEATON, NORTH ONE EAST

OLD RISHWORTHIANS, YORKSHIRE THREE

LEEDS CORINTHIANS, YORKSHIRE FOUR

BAILDON, YORKSHIRE THREE

LEEDS ENGINEERS, NO LONGER IN EXISTENCE

BURLEY, YORKSHIRE THREE

HALIFAX VANDALS, YORKSHIRE THREE

OLD GRAMMARIANS, NO LONGER IN EXISTENCE

EAST REFORD, MIDLAND FOUR EAST (NORTH)

YORK, YORKSHIRE ONE

The clubs still in existence and their current name is in bold

Barnsley currently play in Yorkshire Two and in 2011/12 only have fixtures against three of the twenty three clubs listed above.

Barnsley 11 WPL 12 A very tight game, Barnsley scored the only try and had a penalty chance it in the last minute. The kick drifted wide of the posts and the referee blew the final whistle.
