Ladies Rugby / Castleford U15`s National Champions

Castleford U15`s were this afternoon crowned National champions beating Crediton from Devon 36 points to five.
A fantastic result for both the club and Yorkshire Rugby.

Ladies Rugby / Castleford Ladies with a Yorkshire twist

This season has been a great season for Yorkshire Girls Rugby, with more new girls sides popping up all over the county - Ripon, Selby, Goole, Old Crossleyans, Baildon and now Sandal, to name but a few. These join Old Brods, WPL , Barnsley, Hull, Skipton and Castleford. And it has been a great season for Castleford.This has the best ever season for Castleford RUFC Girls and on 19 April their U15s play Crediton RFC from Devon in the National Cup Final at Lichfield. During the course of that competition they have been the Yorkshire Area winners and Area 6 (Yorkshire, Northumberland, Cumbria and Durham) Winners and beat Newark and Worcester in the Semi Finals. The U13s’ development has been very good too and they have won the Doncaster Floodlit tournament, Malton and Keswick Festivals and won the Area 6 Tournament. The key elements of the success for both U15s and 13s have been the provision of regular fixtures and a consistent approach to develop all squad players, allowing them to enjoy training and playing.

Now that we have Yorkshire Carnegie instead of Leeds...
In the not too distant future is it likely that we get a conflict of interests between Yorkshire County representation and that of Yorkshire Carnegie?
Both teams arguably playing the finest and strongest players Yorkshire has to offer!

Mini & Junior Rugby / Referees for Junior matches

Over the last few years at Castleford it has become increasingly difficult to appoint referees for junior games. Above say U13 level, Personally I believe the lads deserve a decent referee so that they can learn the right way and indeed the wrong way of administering the laws within our game. Without naming a certain few, the away side need to be 14-0 up before they kick off due to the `homer` ref/coach interpretation of the laws often being very one sided. This is no good for the kids, the club nor the game. In contrast there are some clubs out there that are very fair and talk to the kids all through the game. And it is in those circumstances there is no fighting on the field, no `rent a crowd`and more often than not most parents & coaches stop and have a pint after the game and talk about the quality of rugby served up by the kids rather than the referee. We`ve all been there!
Where are the referees at junior level? Since Sunday last week Castleford have tried to appoint a referee for the U`16`s, to this date without success. An injury, Xmas shopping and work commitments have exhausted our efforts thus far. Is or should there be a central pool of referees that are contactable in such circumstances? The way we have always done it hasn't worked this time and for the benefit of the games progress we would like to know what can be put in place. We know it isn't just an issue for Castleford, at least four times this season we have been asked if we could provide a referee for the away fixture. When we have been able to, we have obliged
If anyone could offer any assistance now and in the future it would be greatly appreciated. If all the clubs worked together perhaps, the issues would be less. [paying the traveling expenses of the referee is a requisite] Surely that would be a step forward in the right direction. Talking to the referees after the senior games, they are of the mind that `no one is coming through the system` and they are just about managing to service the senior sections let alone the juniors...

Mini & Junior Rugby / Remembrance day tribute

The kids of today get some bad press, I just thought I would note the impeccable attitude, understanding and respect given to the minutes silence we had at Castleford RUFC yesterday. Visiting teams from Scunthorpe York and Hull, together with the Castleford teams and over 200 spectators stood firm at 11.00 am. I have a daughter in the Army so the lump in my throat was excused. A day to be proud!
I am sure all at other junior matches around the County did the same thing?

Mini & Junior Rugby / Should the YRFU be thinking about a league system in the junior set up?

Interesting that Skippyscrum noted the recent debate about the possibility of leagues at the u13 and above levels. This of course has been raised before but swept under the carpet (again) with no clear reasoning in my unbiased opinion.
My own personal opinion is yes, they should but with strict guidelines based upon the players illegibility.
They must ensure no super club building takes place; like the junior RL try to avoid but dont. Players should sign up at the start of the season and should not be able to sign on with anyone else for that same season. A squad maximum of 22 should be enforced. Poor old WPL will then need to send all the players back they have recruited to their community based clubs. A slight dig yes but an honest appraisal, what is the point of having thirty odd players in a particular age group and your nearest neighbor not having enough to field a side?
I reckon it would mean that the `big clubs` break away into a ten team division but that will ensure a competitive match is had week after week which will certainly make the players much better for it, the representatives squads would also benefit enormously as well. The teams below this elite group should be structured into leagues with one team gaining promotion and one team coming down. This will mean that all levels and abilities are catered for
Now the down side:
At Castleford we have a policy of `if you train you play` would that be endangered should a league system be in place? sure it would! the better players would find a club with better players and the not so goods would probably pack in anyway and that isn't what we want in RU. The Southern Hemisphere junior development structure is based on a `only the strongest survive` but that is with the elite group of players, all the other kids play week in week out in a equally matched league situation.
There are so many advantages in forming a competitive league structure and the main beneficiary would be the community clubs at adult level. Would it mean particularly in Castlefords case, that players are lost to RL at U14 level due to the lure of RL scholarships? perhaps in some cases but if it doesn't / didn't work out ( most often the case) then they can come back to the game they love. Play and train for something that is meaningful.
