An alternative scenario, regarding a place I know well in the Scottish Borders.

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the closure of the Walkerburn Rugby Club, After much consideration and reflection, the committee has made the difficult decision to cease operations. We believe it is our duty to provide clarity regarding the reasons behind this pivotal moment in our club's history.

Over the years, we have witnessed a gradual decline in player participation. Despite our best efforts, assembling a team for matches has become increasingly challenging.

The lack of sufficient player numbers has impacted our ability to compete effectively.

Our dedicated committee members have tirelessly worked to keep the club afloat.

However, the burden of managing critical tasks has fallen upon a small group.the workload has become overwhelming. They have valiantly attempted to perform the duties of a full team, but it is no longer sustainable.

The cancellation of our 100th 7s tournament and our absence from the 24/25 season which would have been our 140th season-weighs heavily on our hearts. These milestones were meant to celebrate our rich history and the passion we share for rugby.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has supported us throughout the years. From the SRU to fellow clubs such as Gala YM and Lismore. Additionally, we appreciate the individuals who volunteered their time, ensuring that Walkerburn Rugby Club remained a vibrant part of our community.

While the chapter may be closing, the memories forged on the pitch, the friendships kindled, and the spirit of rugby will forever resonate within us. We bid farewell with gratitude and a sense of pride for the legacy we leave behind.

Sincerely, The Walkerburn Rugby Club Committee

Whatever the weather, it will be blamed by MSM on “global warming”. I’m sure there’s a script somewhere. The BBC is sure to have a copy.

Just like the round ball game….where the leagues started in defiance of the FA.

Strange, isn’t it ? When I were a lad, I had the philosophy that I would play as often as I could for as long as I could. My last game was two weeks before my 44th birthday.

There were late call-ups, meaning an unexpected away trip at 24 hours notice and the Easter Tour was a thing of beauty, either being on one, or welcoming incomers. I once played on Good Friday, Saturday and Easter Monday.

But not today, unfortunately. It’s a shame about the various Cup competitions, but the writing was on the wall years ago and most Clubs, mine included, are not interested. This lack of interest comes of course from the players, who must be the ultimate decision-makers.

However, I think the answer is to return to 14 team Leagues, which should serves the dual purposes of providing competitive games for the players to the end of April and giving the Clubs’ finances two more home matches.

There could be one too many in NE1 - Doncaster Phoenix might hold the key. Otherwise, there could be a Rochdale like move, but the other way.

Well I hope you can imagine how we all feel in Ilkley ! The move changed our season.

Shame really that the league deciders could be compromised by the PJC.
I’d like to think Driffield would go full strength at Harrogate, because that could be MOTD.
But I think Driff will rest a few.
So comfortable home win for Harrogate and promotion.

Ilkley have had a pretty poor season and will be satisfied with survival in this league. The Heath semi-pros have no choice other than giving their all. An easy away win. But probably no promotion and a lot of someone’s money down the drain. I wonder if they will learn from this season? Or will they try and match Ionions big spending next season?

York have a packed out pre match lunch tomorrow. With a couple of returnees from their injuries list to the match day squad they should be as well placed as ever to beat Alnwick. So a home win with some sparkling rugby would be very welcome.

Ponte v Blaydon
Not sure if Blaydon has won any game on the road this season?
I envisage Ponte will want to finish with a flourish, so home win.

Sandal v Donny who cares? But a home win.

Scunny v Cleck also who cares?
But if Cleck can be bothered? Narrow away win. If not home win.

I suspect the match will have to be played elsewhere, as it’s been pretty wet over this side of the great county. I also suspect that Driff will rest a few, so I’m going for a Harrogate win now.

Ilkley’s season has sadly gone downhill since we lost four centres in the space of two weeks, blunting our sharpest form of attack. We have also struggled against heavier packs and every other team in the league seems to have one ! Still managed a few losing bonus points through…if only those kicks had gone over.

Enjoyed going over to Ponte again and I’m sorry they’re going : all the best for a swift return.

We have two senior players retiring after tomorrow’s game, so there will be a bit of a party atmosphere down at Stacks Field, especially if we get one over Heath ! Well, you never know.

Enjoy the big lunch at York - you can walk it off going over to the pitch !

An interesting final week for sure. Looking at the table, I just wondered how it would look of all the bonus points were removed. Spookily, there would be no change at all !

Driffield would still be above Alnwick, but on points difference and the same for Ilkley vis a vis Cleckheaton.

On to the forecasts…

The two big matches are of course Harrogate v Driffield and Ilkley v Heath. I saw both games against ‘gate and Ilkley won the away one. Similarly, I’ve seen both the Driffield games and Ilkley were well beaten on both occasions. If it’s not played at Harrogate, then I’m going for a Driff win, so long as they aren’t resting players for t’Cup. If it’s actually played at home, then I think it will be a close home win.

It seems ages since we got a bit of drubbing in Halifax and I can understand how just about everyone is forecasting a Heath win. I’m just hoping we can pick up a point or two and that Scunthorpe beat Cleck - don’t want to finish third from bottom ! So…

Driffield
Ilkley ( never bet against my own team )
Blaydon
Sandal
Scunthorpe
York

Bit of a hammering for Donny it would appear. Big games next weekend at Harrogate ( maybe ! ) and Ilkley.

I tend to agree that Harrogate should clinch the title, to which frankly, they’re welcome ! Still, Driff will give them a good game, as Ilkley will Heath.

From a Stacks Field point of view, I just hope we don’t come third from bottom at 10th, having reached the lofty heights of 6th not so long ago.

By the way, Differ Lid, I thought the referee had a great game yesterday ( apart from the missed forward pass, obvs ! )

He was more interested in letting the game flow than constantly looking for things to penalise. A few in the league should follow suit.
