A bit of history.......
In 1998 our Founder Trustee, Hilary Massarella, saw a documentary about a young girl. She was 14 years old and had been severely abused by not just one, but a number of adults into whose care she had been placed, beginning with her own mother and father. Finally she prostituted herself in a lorry park to earn enough money to run away from what was happening to her.
For two years Hilary researched the issues around running away. There was no doubt, in South Yorkshire, as in many places across the country; children were feeling they had no alternative but to run away. Awareness of the problem desperately needed to be raised and something practical and long lasting urgently needed to be created.
In response to this need it was in June 2000 that a Management Committee and a Fundraising Group were formed. The Management Committee successfully established SAFE@LAST as a Company Limited by Guarantee and a Registered Charity recruiting a highly skilled Board of Trustees. The Fundraising Group generated funds to support the development of the good practice that we see today and the group continues even now to raise vital funds. As SAFE@LAST has grown, its management has evolved into a smooth running and effective system that supports the professional staff team.
.....and to the present day
Overall responsibility for the organisation is held by the Board of Trustees whose Chairman is Dan Dean. Founder Trustee Hilary Massarella maintains a significant presence within the organisation with a particular focus on the long term strategic development. Day to day management of the services for young people have been developed to high quality standards by the Director of Children and Young Peoples Services, Tracy Haycox and Director of Operations and Strategy, Mark Smith, manages the supporting departments, Communications, Grants, Fundraising, Volunteering and Administration.. The charity is fortunate to enjoy the support of several non-management groups who make a significant contribution to our success; these include Patrons, the Fundraising Group and the SAFE@LAST Appeal Committee.
SAFE@LAST now has 23 staff members and many volunteers. We provide a 24 hour Helpline, a Missing Young People’s service, a Preventative education programme, Detached Street Work Project, Family Support and, most remarkably of all, the only Refuge in England for children and young people who are 16 and under. . Our young people present to us with many complex issues including neglect, physical abuse, self harming, forced marriage, conflict and violence at home, sexual exploitation, mental health problems and many more.
Since 2005 SAFE@LAST has worked with thousands of young people and made a difference to the lives of the great majority of them. We are seeing great results from our work, and as a result our staff and volunteers are receiving awards for their contribution to Social Care in South Yorkshire and being consulted for their expertise and knowledge in this area.
SAFE@LAST is now delivering its services across all four boroughs in South Yorkshire and continues to strive for excellence resulting in the very best outcomes for young people.
