Myself and Andy Appleyard, from Barnsley, are organising a Charity Rugby match, to be played on Thursday 27th December, at Shaw Lane, Barnsley. The game will be played between a South Yorkshire Invitation XV and a Yorkshire Legends XV. All proceeds from the day will be donated to Weston Park Cancer Hospital.
A little bit about Weston Park:
One in three people in the UK will be affected by cancer. Weston Park Hospital is one of only four dedicated cancer hospitals in England and its reputation as a centre of excellence in the fight against cancer is recognised not only here in the UK, but also internationally.
It provides cancer treatment services for patients across this entire region - Rotherham, Barnsley, Doncaster, Worksop and Chesterfield as well as Sheffield. Increasingly treatment is being delivered in the community and local hospitals under the expertise of Weston Park Hospital specialists.
The hospital's expertise resides in the range of effective radiotherapy and chemotherapy treatments that are performed and patients travel from all across the country, in some cases even from abroad, in order to receive the specialist treatments and care for which Weston Park is renowned.
6,000 people are diagnosed with cancer every year in this region alone.
As home to what is arguably one of the best radiotherapy departments in the UK (and the only one in the vicinity of South Yorkshire, North Nottinghamshire and North Derbyshire), Weston Park Hospital is ideally equipped to handle the 6,000 new cases of cancer diagnosed annually in this region alone. On average, nearly 60,000 patient visits are received every year by the department.
For patients undergoing intensive regimes of chemotherapy (not suitable for administering on the new chemotherapy unit), Weston Park possesses 78 inpatient beds spread over 4 separate wards.
An average of 30 people per day visit the hospital’s chemotherapy unit as outpatients and our consultants also work tirelessly alongside a number of outpatient clinics in the surrounding areas of Rotherham, Doncaster, Barnsley, Worksop and Chesterfield, to help plan the most beneficial chemotherapy treatments for people attending their own District General Hospitals.Myself and Andy are looking to put together the South Yorkshire XV ( the Yorkshire Legends are being organised by John Dudley). We have come up with a couple of rules for selection for the SY team:
- Players must either play for a South Yorkshire Club or reside in South Yorkshire
- No more than three players can be selected from any one club
If you have any players within your club that may want to play or you yourself would like to play then please get in touch via e-mail to
SYInvitationXV@live.co.ukYou will need to send us the players full name, playing position and name of the club they play for!
We are expecting that the Legends will be a relatively strong side, so will be selecting players to reflect this, while also trying to get a fair spread of clubs represented from across the district!
We are also looking for anyone within the rugby community who has been affected by Cancer or has had involvement with Weston Park, who would either like to play or be involved with the days events. Again please contact us on the e-mail above.
We look forward to hearing from you and hopefully seeing many of you on the day! When we have final details of the days events, I will post them on here!
