I thought this might have been a congratulatory post to Keighley on their promotion back to Y1. Fully deserved, along with Whetherby and Hullensians, by far the stand out teams in the league this year.

Unlucky to the lad from Ribb but you take the risk when you step onto the field. Assuming his team mates took retribution on the Baildon 7? I'm sure that would've be better than moaning on here about financial help....

One persons banter is another persons abuse. Try not be offended. It’s rugby, they all give as good as they get. And have a pint with each other afterwards 🍻

I understand Old Grov can't raise a side for Saturday...? Not sure if it's covid related or if the game will be rearranged? Anyone have any news?

That's what I have heard, Thornensians are unable to send a team to Keighley,  5 points to KLY and 5 point deduction for them I've been told.

5 point home win to Hullensians and the reverse fixture will be a home game for Hullensians too. Not heard if OG will receive a 5 point deduction, but I'm guessing they will.

What a shame that after 18 months with no rugby sides can't raise a team 3 months into the season, especially at Y2 level.

Hullensians v Leeds Corinthians already postponed due to a Covid outbreak for the home team.

First game for us will now be Keefly away the following week.

I wonder how many games will succumb to this over the year. Will put pressure on the fixture lists!

Why level 5? Some clubs at level 6 and 7 have similar levels of travel and time away?

Are we really sure that if all payments stopped tomorrow more people would play rugby and lower teams would have more players? I think you have to go some way to evidence that....

I would prefer a game where nobody is paid. I have never taken a penny out of the game of rugby. However we have to be realistic and pragmatic ...the game is now open and normal market conditions exist.

And let's be honest there has always been payment in Rugby Union it may be slightly more prevalent now and above the table but it has always happened.

I appreciate there are exceptions to the rule, there always will be.

I did say it's only one element of the lack of participation in the game.

I agree it's the way the game is, I just don't believe it's in the best interest of the game as a whole. And certainly some of the amounts that have been banded around compared to the quality they are receiving leave a lot to be desired. But if people are prepared to pay it then so be it.

It has always been there in some capacity, it just seems to be happening more often nowadays.

Anyway, an interesting conversation point that I'm sure will be debated again in the future! And I'm sure mutual agreement will never be reached! Suppose life would be boring if we all got on though...

Some interesting points..

But why is it sad that someone travels to receive payment? Isn't it just like a weekend job? Why is it so controversial? If he didn't make money from rugby be might have a milk round, or do more hours in a office or go shopping with his Mrs/Mr. What is the obsession with payment??

The trend with paying players at L6/7 is what is sad. The point about the lad travelling is more to do with a local team not being able to compete to attract a player who lives around the corner, to go an hour up the road for £200, to a team who sit 1 position (as of start of the day yesterday) higher than said local team.

L5 and above sensible financial compensation for players is, in my opinion, necessary, as every other week often your full weekend is taken up representing your club, from early morning bus to arriving home to your family late.

Unfortunately that has trickled down to the levels below, and has created a generation of players (and owners/chairmen) who are hell bent on spending (sometimes) beyond their means to maintain an average level of rugby whilst not encouraging younger and local players to give it a go at their local club. The lack of 2/3/4th teams in the area is partial proof of this over the last 10 years or so. I appreciate there are several other factors in this also.

I just think playing for the love of the game is slowly disappearing. I'm sure most supporters at this level whilst enjoying seeing their side gain promotion/avoid relegation would prefer to see that with a team made up of local lads giving it their all for the love of their club, and rugby. I know there are exceptions to this and clubs have ambition, I just feel the balance has drifted towards the financial route too often and some sides would be better off to find their natural level and grow organically again.

Tough fought game at Springhead Lane today, Brid worthy winners in the end. Perhaps the scoreline flattered them a little, but take nothing away from them. Probably have invested enough to stay in Y1. We will continue to fight to the bitter end, as we always have.  Reffed ok by the young 17 year old, I wish him well in his refereeing career. We’ll leave the authorities to deal with the unsavoury language at the end of the game.

On to our plight. We’ve probably been fighting above our weight for a number of years now, and have haemorrhaged quality year on year, and been unable to replace it. Hullensians, unfortunately, isn’t quite the attractive proposition as some of our more illustrious neighbours, which makes it difficult to attract quality to go alongside our juniors and stalwarts!

Add to that a couple of long term injuries, the retirement of our experienced scrum half, and the loss of our captain and player of the year last year to Ionians 2nd team (plus a large chunk of cash).

Whilst on the subject of £, today one of Brid’s centres lives a stones throw away from Springhead Lane yet travels over an hour away to play for Brid (and a reported £200 per game fee). I don’t blame him, just a sad sad state of affairs with the current game at this level.

As for the rest of the season, we will give it our all to pick up as many points as possible, starting with a local derby at Beverley next week!

Ribb travelled to Wath yeaterday after being told the pitch would be playable by the time we got there. As is transpired it was still frozen in patches and , in ALL our lads opinion was not safe. We know Wath have suffered from the recent deluges close to their pitch, and we support them in the terrible issues that has brought both the club and some of their members. However our coach costs £450 and whatever condition the pitch was in at 2.00pm it must have been in a less good condition in terms of playing on it at 9.00am when we were informed that we were "Good to go".
My point is if a team are having to travel two and a half hours on an expensive coach the home team, IMHO, has a duty to call off the game if there is any doubt about it. As is stands now we will have to go again on the 21st Dec, which is no problem but will cost us another £450 as 75 miles is too far to ask lads to represent the club and drive.
A little disappointing from a Ribb perspective.

Unfortunate, bit like when Hullensians travelled to Ribb a few years ago, 4 hours there through diversions for flooded roads. To find the water lapping around our ankles when we got there! Trip home was even longer due to more flooding, a good drink was had by all though.

Drama at Springhead Lane. Knowing that Rish were winning, in the 79th minute Selby had a scrum on our 5m, we thought we were down. But we forced a turnover carried out to the 22, recycled the ball, put it through 6 pairs of hands then our winger scorched 3 Selby defenders to go in at the corner. Scenes.

Sums up our season. Well done to our lads for sticking at it. Hopefully we can kick on from this. It’s been a very tough year for us with limited resources. So over the moon to retain our Y1 status. Unlucky Rish, quite an effort to get 3 wins on the bounce at the end of the season, just glad we could match it!

Rish need a win against Moortown final game of the season, coupled with us losing at home to Selby, to see them safe.

We will be safe with any kind of win, or a Moortown victory.

Credit must go to Rish and us for pulling off 2 wins in 2 weeks, especially last week with away victories at Brods and Middlesbrough respectively. Neither are easy places to get wins!

Fully agree.

Nonsense like this that can influence a youngster wanting to play senior rugby, in a time where player numbers are on the wane.

What a croc of tosh, tell him to go train at Wigan RL he can play superleague at 16. School Sat morning, club 3/4th team Sat afternoon and colts on a Sunday. Too young, can't play so many minutes in a week, no wonder the ruddy sport as gone to prop and why every one under the age of 18 is over indulged snow flake. If Otley had not fessed up, would anyone have known, cared. Hope he had a good game.

Brods kick penalty in last play of the match to win

Last week against Heath last play conversion from wide out to win the game goes wide, this week a last play pen gives Brods the win. Fine margins between safe in mid table and a relegation fight.
