Wow, wonder what implications this has on Keighley?

PM arranged a lift for JH to get to Yarnbury. He arrived at Yarnbury approximately 20 minutes
into the training session and spoke to Charlie Maunder (CM) informing CM that he was a Colt
and had been training with Keighley RUFC senior side and that he preferred senior training.
He trained with the senior squad that evening and again on the 17th and 22nd January

I was reading that the other day.
One for the pedants would be define training. I suspect Keighley will say non contact training only.

Very interesting to note that the sanction was only 4 point with a further 4 suspended to the end of the season. Doncaster Phoenix were deducted 10 league points for a similar offence!

I think perhaps the way Otley voluntarily came forward with the information may have worked in their favour. Big blow for them as they were chasing a playoff spot in Nat2North. I assume the deduction is to their 1st XV. I can't see this impacting on Keighley though.

A few years Rochdale got a 20 point penalty spread over 2 seasons for the same offence.

4 points seems very lenient.

I have to say this kind of thing is a pet hate of mine in our sport, seemingly the higher up the structure you are the more lenient the sanction.

Can anyone explain this one?

Doncaster Phoenix played a 16 year old in a pre-season 10's tournament this year and subsequently received a 20-point deduction (10 suspended)

Otley have just been deducted 8 points (4 suspended) for exactly the same offence.

Why the difference in punishments?

Not sure if it is relevant but Doncaster Phoenix were sanctioned by Yorkshire RFU and Otley were sanctioned by the RFU.

It is rare for any two cases to be exactly the same.

Otley was given credit for declaring the matter to the RFU and for taking prompt action to ensure it did not happen in the future.

It is not possible to tell from the Yorkshire RFU web site if those same circumstances prevailed with DP.

Its nonsense!

A genuine error.

The Young man can legally marry and have children of his own, get a job, join the military, drive a motor cycle.

Political correctness gone mad!

A genuine mistake, no advantage sought or gained!

What does this say to those who may fall foul of a similar mistake in the future?

Where is the reward for honesty and integrity?

I assumed Donny Phoenix were aware along what they had done, whereas Otley weren't. ??

The Rochdale one was an 8 point deduction to 1st team for a 16yr old (who said he was 17) playing in a 4th team game.

Seems like Otley punishment is very lenient in comparison.

Always seem to go easy on the big clubs.

What a croc of tosh, tell him to go train at Wigan RL he can play superleague at 16. School Sat morning, club 3/4th team Sat afternoon and colts on a Sunday. Too young, can't play so many minutes in a week, no wonder the ruddy sport as gone to prop and why every one under the age of 18 is over indulged snow flake. If Otley had not fessed up, would anyone have known, cared. Hope he had a good game.

I would say the issues to take into account and will have an influence on sentence are:

1) did the club willingly break the rules?
2) the duration of the offence, i.e. 5 mins at the end of a 3rd team match or 5 1st XV appearances.
3) if the matter was uncovered by the club or by others
4) if the club offered the information to the authorities.
5) the processes and procedures put in place to prevent it happening again.

There's enough variation above to suggest a wide range of sentence.

Also I think we all have to get used to the idea of senior rugby being for 18 and above shortly. From a safeguarding perspective there are numerous risks to children (by law) playing, changing and socialising with adults.
Loving all rugby but especially at grassroots level.

Fully agree.

Nonsense like this that can influence a youngster wanting to play senior rugby, in a time where player numbers are on the wane.

U18 bit I dont get,  as already stated old enough to drive and fight for the country but not play rugby? Keeping players? So for example he left school at 16 to do an apprenticeship on a building site, exposed to most things, in pub by 3pm on a Friday, out clubbing most Saturdays, played rugby at school, live near a club with no colts, does he stop for 2 years or go 200 yds further and play rugby league, player lost to the game!!! , if there is any concern reference body developing, front row should be 21, and all other positions should be 17.
