Ilkley RFC regrets to announce that former President Sir David Jones has passed away after a long spell in hospital and a brave fight against his Parkinson’s disease.

Sir David retired from the Presidency at the end of last Season.

He was a warm-hearted, generous and witty President and will be sorely missed.

Not sure I had the pleasure of meeting Sir David unless he was the gent who almost single handedly raised most of the money for your new 5 star facility. if that is him I did have the pleasure of meeting him and I can personally confirm he was indeed a true gentlemen. if not then either way from all at North Ribb sincere best wishes to all his family at this sad time.

HNY to you.

Ah Flaggy, I fear you are thinking of the not-quite-yet-knighted Richard Scargill, who mercifully is still very much with us. David was CEO and then Chairman of Next plc and was widely credited with pulling the Company round.

He was responsible for sponsoring Leicester Tigers and flew Martin Johnson up to Ilkley to open the new facilities. We played our old friends Scarborough that day, who obligingly lost ( I think ! )

He was a great President for us and even when suffering badly from Parkinson’s, never failed to charm.

And Happy New Year from Heathrow !

I had the pleasure of meeting Sir David Jones twice. The first occasion was at Berties Banqueting Suite Elland where he was a guest of  the late Garfield Owen, who also suffered from Parkinson’s. Sir David had published his book and his speech was very interesting especially his life at Grattans, Next Directories and his dispute with George Davies..
The next time I met him was at York RUFC when Ilkley won the Yorkshire Shield  in 2014. Very knowledgable re rugby esp at Ilkley and Leicester Tigers.
