To All Yorkshire Committee Members
Please note the following narrative has been sent out to Club Secretaries and Chairs today:
Following a recommendations from the County’s Competition Committee and after a lengthy discussion at last night’s Yorkshire Committee it has been decided that reluctantly all Yorkshire Cup Competitions will terminate this season with immediate effect.  This decision has not been taken lightly but was based on the following:
·         The lack of available dates to complete the programmes.
·         Player welfare issues.
·         A lack of appetite to use walkovers to progress the competitions which would undermine the integrity of the Cups.
We are very much committed to the concept of County Cups and will do everything in our power to ensure that next season meaningful County Cup competitions take place at all levels.
If you have any thoughts and/or would like to get involved in the management of competitions within the county then please email the County Chair at barrybreakwell@btinternet.com
Regards

Barry Breakwell
Chair

Unbelievable.
Just when they are imposing smaller leagues against the wishes of the majority so that another cup competition can be played (or not) at the seasons end. Think the RFU have totally lost the plot where grass roots rugby is concerned.

If YRFU want meaningful cup competitions, why not run them in August? No need for pre season friendlies then!
Then have the final at the end of the season!

Agreed, Flaggy ! Had there ever been a plot, it’s well and truly lost now.

It's not the YRFU fault....they are just dealing with reality.

The RFU however are completely misunderstanding grassroots rugby.
Loving all rugby but especially at grassroots level.

Thank you for your kind remarks.

Have you ever tried organising a Cup Competition?

It’s really easy, oh but you must build in 16 and 14 team leagues, clubs will always prefer league matches versus Cup matches, won’t play midweek, August is for friendlies and of course Covid. I could go on, but if someone would like to organise the Yorkshire Cup Competitions, then be my guest.

Why not look at regional cup competitions, like the Aire-Wharfe cup but with a mix of 1st and 2nd XV, some games could be played midweek under lights if necessary. winners of the respective regional areas can face off at the end of the season to award an overall winner.

Fredsbar - There seems to have been very little interest in Cup Competitions for quite some time - presumably, this is why they are difficult to organise.

No one seems to know exactly how the reduced leagues will operate next season, but from what I gather, the reduction in league games can be compensated by having ( more ) Cup games. But no one is interested.

It’s a great shame the old Silver Trophy/Shield/Cup format disappeared and my fear is that with fewer teams in the league, a game which is already under great pressure will nose-dive.

The RFU were told exactly that at those pointless regional discussions.
But no, they knew best.
It doesn't help when cup competitions were structured round Leagues, ie. L7 = Yorkshire shield, L6 this season. There is no cup element to that, it just becomes an unwanted fixture apart from the two or three clubs at the top of that relevant league.
This restructuring may well be the death knell for some smaller clubs, especially in the strong Rugby League areas. As soon as the 12 team league games are done, some lads will be off playing league.
