Whilst at risk of me and Kellythorpe being easier to just send telegrams to each other, I will keep going, might need to start some controversial comments to drag some people out of the woodwork, but let’s see!

Following the first round of fixtures and no massive surprises, I’m looking forward to round 2, and hopefully starting to get a better idea about a few sides

Billingham Vs York

Home advantage will always play its part for Billingham, combined with the fact they will be far to good for York, another big Win for Billingham I think.

Cleckheaton Vs West Bridgford

Don’t know anything about the West Bridgford side, but last weeks results tell me Cleck are going to have far to much for them, specially as they won’t be used to 3 mile walk to the pitch. Cleck Win

Doncaster Phoenix Vs Scunthorpe

Another week that doesn’t tell anyone to much about either of these sides. 2 teams who finish low last season, another battle of the big boys. Phoenix to have to much and get a close win

Driffield vs Sandal

First home game, first time the Kelleythorpe crowd get to see a level 5 league fixture in over a decade. Playing against a Sandal side who are more then use to this level of rugby. I have to go with home advantage and a Driffield win

Heath Vs Paviors

Heath should easily match the Paviors forwards power, Johnson’s victory tour at 10 will certainly be able to pick apart Paviors back 3. Big win for Heath

Ilkley  Vs Alnwick

Game of the day for me. Will last years North 1 champs be able to get back to winning ways against an Alnwick team who should be finishing in the top 3 this season? I think the home advantage will be enough for a narrow Ilkley win.

6 home wins for me this week, think Alnwick and Scunny will pick up a couple of bonus points on the road!

Cheers Bren! Sandal must of listen to your war cry, but unfortunately they didn’t have the fitness to compete with Driffield. It was a cracking day. Driffield 14-0 up inside 5 minutes, then complacency seemed to set in. 26-24 at half time to Driff as end to end rugby was on show.

Yet again Driffield should not of conceded the points that they did, but full credit to sandal. The 15 minutes in the run up to half time and 5 minutes after half time which gave Sandal a brief lead 26-31.

It was short lived, and said more about the way Driffield defended then how Sandal attacked. Again I think Driffield have played one of the sides to finish at the bottom end of the table. Fitness being the major issue (Sandal 10 points down and the Sandal scrumhalf kicking the ball away, seem a little odd as they were to receive a goal line drop out)

Anyway Cracking game at Driffield! Come on Driff!! P.S Driffield 2s beat Sandal 2s 59-20 🔵????

Driffield Womens won 29-7. But from what I watched seemed a very competitive game.

Obviously a great day down at Kelleythorpe today. Scunthorpe next week will be a test, but the squad has to be confident.

Really interest to hear about todays games. Heaths Win looks incredibly convincing and Ilkley vs Alnwick sounds as predicted the game of the day.

For the second week running Driffield were up against a very big pack, but fitness in the end was the vital factor. It was shown in defence and attack as the game wore on. The tight scrums showed that a low, coordinated shove was able to send Sandal back on their own ball, and on a couple of times maybe Driffield should have had a penalty. In the last portion of the game when Sandal were reduced in numbers their scrum was in disarray. One always felt the Driffield backs had the legs on Sandal and scored some good tries with backing up a feature. Sandal seemed to rely on the maul
near the line which was very effective three times. With their very sizeable nos 5 and 8 they will trouble some sides.but their pack will get found out by fitter sides as the game wears on. Driffield spent the last 10 minutes attacking in the Sandal 22. One would expect another big pack at Scunthorpe next Saturday. Referee kept good control of the game.

Paviors made the long trip to Heath missing a few players and a few lads on the pitch were carrying obvious injuries. They did not have much opportunity to score. But they kept pushing for 80 minutes and were rewarded with a try in the second half for their efforts. Paviors have a sizeable pack and they are extremely good in the Lineout and mauls. Paviors also dominated the scrum for 80 minutes, causing Heath a lot of issues. This area will win them many games this season. They appeared a bit light in the backs, but I assume that area has been effected by injuries and unavailability’s. West Vale continues its reputation of being a meat grinder and Heath are happy with the win. Paviors play Ilkley next at their spot, i feel the paviors forwards will be too much for Ilkley, however the battle in the backs will determine the reault. Heath play Sandal under the Friday night lights, should be a bit cooler for all the unfit forwards of heath and sandal.

Heath first 2 results look very good for them, Ilkley appear to have played two very strong sides and someone will no doubt be on the receiving end of a thumping at the hands of Ilkley, Paviors this weekend could well be that day.

Heath should have too much for Sandal, even the Heath from last season would do a job, never mind Heath 2.0 of this season. If Heath can control Sandals 8 and 12 then it will be a very one-sided game I think

The Ilkley v Alnwick game was very different from the one before, against Heath.

The Heath game was just a follow on from last season, played in much the same style - pretty brutal and a lot of injuries.

The Alnwick game was much more like a level 5 game - faster, with far less time to think. Newcomers to the league will find it much sharper than level 6. It was close too - Alnwick scored two unconverted tries, before Ilkley kicked two penalties and had a try disallowed. There was also a knock-on over the line. Eventually, Alnwick kicked a late penalty to make it 6-13, but Ilkleybwere well worthy of their second losing bonus point.

Paviors have a big pack apparently, which won’t be to Ilkley’s liking, but my forecast will be for an away win.

I was informed by a reliable source that the Alnwick v Ilkley game was more like a level 4 game, packed full of pace, skill and penalty kicks. I would say the Heath vs paviors game was more like a level 8 game. Big lazy forwards beating each other up for 80 minutes, only allowing the backs to score when they tired. The fact the ball ever made it passed 10 was a miracle. If Ilkley found the heath physicality too much to handle then they will suffer immensely under the heavy hands of Paviors. Best of luck to all teams playing this weekend. Heath play sandal under Friday night lights so no need for the double decker fun bus from Halifax high school.

Not so sure about level 4, but it took Ilkley 20 minutes to adjust to Alnwick’s pace, by which time they were 10 points down. Having said that, the home side knocked on over the line and had a score disallowed for a double movement in the first half and the late penalty to the visitors was the second half’s only score, so it was actually another very tight game.

Ilkley will certainly improve, but I dare say so will everyone else !
