Anyone know when they are uploaded on the YRFU site?

The YRFU Pitchero website has a ‘legacy’ problem which means that Pitchero cannot carry out amendments to CB websites. This is not restricted to Yorkshire, but we are trying to arrange for this matter to be dealt with as a matter of urgency.

We've also had our opposition pull out for this weekend. Not the best start to a new season.

Fredsbar can I possibly get a copy of the full fixture list for all sides in our league for the coming season?

Our opposition for the 9th looked to have pulled out and I’m aware that two sides we’ve arranged games against don’t think they will be playing this season.

I’ve 20 lads ready to play on the 9th so want to find someone to play.

It appears that even after the organisers agreed to widen the teams into one merit league that it will have no real beneficial effect as so many clubs are struggling to put out second teams. Our 2s have had two games called off in four weeks and I think this is going to undermine the future of the merit table. We are on the verge of abandoning this after discussion with our coaches and think its a better idea to partner up with 5 other local clubs who will commit to play each other at least 4 times per season, therefore giving these players at least 20 matches per season, which I believe is the least they should expect. This will reduce travel expenses and in most cases result in more money over the bar, With Bus costs through the roof, train travel to local clubs and developing regular fixtures is In think at the moment the way forward. It is a real shame that our game has come to this, but, clubs that make a big effort to get two teams out by making their club a good place to play should be able to provide their players with fixtures. To all those clubs who keep cancelling away fixtures but expect the opposition to travel later in the season. I suspect you will shortly be thinking the same as us.

I'll start off with a positive, despite only having 10 players Burley turned up and we leant them our bench to make it 14v14 with reduced game time of an hour. We've built up a decent relationship with them and helped them last season get a side out when they needed help with numbers. One of a few sides who rely on students.

However Ribbflagman I can only agree with you looking to the future. Im finding the whole process frustrating now with rugby consuming more and more of my time during the week. That's getting a side together (what's new) to chasing fixture secretary's to gauge as early as possible if we have a game or not. Last season I took on the role of arranging fixtures for the 3's due to not having a secretary and I did the same this season. I was given assurances by some of my contacts despite not fielding a 2's for years that they would absolutely be fielding a side this year. West Park being an example, week before the game I went down to watch the Tykes and whilst ordering a drink told the bar man we would be playing them the following week and looking forward to it. He laughed. Unsurprisingly after chasing the secretary they didn't have the players.Great.

We managed to get a last minute game against Leo's who too were playing another phantom 2's side Bradford Salem. The drama didn't end here either after asking to keep the ref we supposedly had for our league game we then found out we didn't have one due to the massive shortage of referee's now facing the game. Scratching around we found an ex player to do it.

This Saturday just gone wasn't without drama as I say low playing numbers and again no referee resulted in calls going out far and wide where we convinced a local ref to cancel his weekend off. Massively indebted to him for that. Hope he found his car keys.

I find Duncan one of the best to deal with up at yours Flaggy and have arranged 4 games with yourselves with one of them being our annual coach allowance. The other fixture we are pooling cars and Im personally having to throw money in to cover fuel. All for the love of the game.

Im under massive pressure to make sure we get our home games on due to being the only side at home on those days as our 2's now follow the 1's for near on every game. So understand the bar takings angle as well.

I think the game in general in this country is now going to go through a massive period of change and that will result in more clubs going to the wall.

I know there are those who will argue they arrange the fixtures in hope or good faith they will get a side out but it is frustrating to be on the receiving end of it.

Im looking at our fixture list nervously and already seeing Roundhegians have only played one of their last four games as well conceding home fixtures...

Spot on Rob,
no need to worry about a coach allowance. Come to Settle on the Train. It will be less than half the cost of a coach and if the timetable doesnt really work we will, if we can, flex the KO to suit you. Like minded clubs such as ours should stick together and not engage with others until they can speak candidly about the prospects of playing away 2nd team fixtures. I know its controversial but our clubs cannot afford to keep getting gazumped through false promises. Leaving willing players without a game and zero money over the bar.

Comments Please.

In the three fixtures we’ve had scheduled for our 2’s we’ve had 22 then 5 then 19 available. Our player’s consistent availability across both teams at the moment is really poor at the moment, 6 or 7 changes in the first team every week so far. The World Cup is having an effect but we’re just finding that people are t making rugby a priority on a Saturday any more and it’s killing merit table rugby as a knock on effect from the first teams.

I don’t know what the answer is but maybe clubs could be a bit more honest about their numbers a bit earlier in advance? It is difficult though as in the case of our fixture against yourselves we had 17 available on Sunday with a few maybes, then one by one the ‘injuries’ and excuses started piling up and left us with 5 eventually.

Dont worry Mr Prop It can be difficult at times but as we did last year. We went to Corinthians with 10 players and some lads from West Leeds came down and had a game (theirs was cancelled) and 30 odd guys got a game. If you are ever short when coming to Ribb. Please be candid and we will always try to get enough collectively so that everyone can get a game. That in my opinion is much better than the alternative blank date.

When I attended the merit league working group at the end of the 2022 season there were lots of ideas bandied about and not one that I've seen put into action. Seemed like a box ticking exercise by the RFU with zero follow up. Only 2 clubs attended in person with 6 more via zoom though. One of the better proposals to come out was to have some sort of facebook group set up to bring clubs looking for players or players looking for clubs together. For example, Pythons have 5 players looking for a game is anyone short? Or Ribb have 12 players looking for a few extra. Pretty much the exact situation you described between yourselves and West Leeds. There's a lot of teams in our merit league not playing regularly, surely there must be players going without rugby? I'm not sure how we'd go about setting one up, would it have to be through the YRFU or could it just be set up? Would only really need one rep from each club in the group.

I believe there is a FB group already running that does this for Yorkshire?

Last time I went to one of those meetings was before covid hosted by Old Brods and chaired by Andy Fradgley and Dave Towler if I’m not mistaken.

It was one of those we will take your opinions on board when we ask for them…I’ll never forget them rolling their eyes as soon as the suggestions started coming forth. I knew then I’d wasted my night.

Things soon liven up when the free drinks were offered up.

As to what can be done?Cave in the merit league put all those competitive that are left into the league above and split it into two.

Or as Ribb says small local leagues with perhaps a grand final.

At last after three seasons and some close games but never a win. North Ribb 2s defeated Ilkley 3s on Saturday.  I think it's about one of their first defeats  for over two seasons. Played in good spirits and two teams that know each other well through regular fulfilled fixtures. Beats merit games being called off regularly any day.
Rob    Sorry I missed you. I came looking for you but was told you had to dash. Maybe next time.
