It was touted as “match of the day” and for those who were privileged to witness two committed teams giving 110%, it certainly lived up to the billing.
Both teams were keen to get back on track after recent defeats, both sets of players and their supporters aware that the days result would go some way to define the seasons outcome.
The reverse fixture had seen Rochdale take the spoils with a last minute penalty at Sandhill Lane. Today’s game was just as close, there was never more than four points between the teams.
The pitch was unsurprisingly heavy and as predicted the weather turned inclement in the second half, but this didn’t deter from the spectacle, neither did the constant appealing from the Rochdale coaching staff for non existent infringements which can only be seen as a tactic to try to influence the referee.
It didn’t work, the referee had a good game and managed the game well. He was consistent and you can’t ask for more.
Into the dying minutes of the match, Rochdale had a four point cushion but Selby were pressing for the win. It came and the supporters relief was as tangible as the jubilation.
At the final whistle the players had given their all.
Time will tell if this fixture is to be repeated, will Selby go up and will Rochdale return to the NW leagues.
Selby will remember their visit to Rochdale for sometime.
