Have a read of pages 10 and 11 in today's Daily Telegraph.  Interesting read for those interested where our game is going.

Cant read it without subsciption. Would be surprised if it came to a conclusion any different from "some clubs leerdammer shed loads of money down the drain to massage the egos of a few blazers, resulting in said clubs gaining a few promotions whilst their facilities crumble and their 2nd and 3rd teams fold. Eventually followed by the blazer with the money either dieying or just getting bored and leaving resulting in the club either folding or spending years sliding back down the tables getting humped 100-0 untill they eventually get back to the level they should have always stayed at" -

Just my guess please enlighten us if it found anything we have not all already seen multiple times.

Locally to us Kirkby Lonsdale spring to mind, In Yorkshire Leeds Tykes , and the extinct Wakefield. In Cornwall Mounts Bay went from local leagues to nationals and then folded. I am sure with a bit more research you could find plenty more, London Irish, London Welsh, Richmond (although they are back now) Worcester, Wasps, The list goes on and on. When will reality overcome vanity.????

An alternative scenario…

Closure of Walkerburn Rugby Club

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the closure of the Walkerburn Rugby Club, After much consideration and reflection, the committee has made the difficult decision to cease operations. We believe it is our duty to provide clarity regarding the reasons behind this pivotal moment in our club's history.

Over the years, we have witnessed a gradual decline in player participation. Despite our best efforts, assembling a team for matches has become increasingly challenging.

The lack of sufficient player numbers has impacted our ability to compete effectively.

Our dedicated committee members have tirelessly worked to keep the club afloat.

However, the burden of managing critical tasks has fallen upon a small group.the workload has become overwhelming. They have valiantly attempted to perform the duties of a full team, but it is no longer sustainable.

The cancellation of our 100th 7s tournament and our absence from the 24/25 season which would have been our 140th season-weighs heavily on our hearts. These milestones were meant to celebrate our rich history and the passion we share for rugby.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has supported us throughout the years. From the SRU to fellow clubs such as Gala YM and Lismore. Additionally, we appreciate the individuals who volunteered their time, ensuring that Walkerburn Rugby Club remained a vibrant part of our community.

While the chapter may be closing, the memories forged on the pitch, the friendships kindled, and the spirit of rugby will forever resonate within us. We bid farewell with gratitude and a sense of pride for the legacy we leave behind.

Sincerely, The Walkerburn Rugby Club Committee

Many thanks to Walkerburn Rugby Club for their history and efforts in our game.  Very sad at the news of your closure. Not a step taken lightly I'm sure.

Hoping you find solace elsewhere in the Borders.

DAA,
really good article, well presented and just about sums up all that is not right about our game in the middle leagues. Dont know what the answer is but clearly what is happening at present is not good for the long term future of the game.

It is destroying the game.

The journey men who are moving clubs for additional funds aren’t going to be turning out for 2nd and 3rd teams without payment, whilst helping the development of clubs junior players. Which is why many clubs lower teams are folding, and young players have to leave, or stop playing all together.

Totally agree DL.
Just need to convince the blazers that this an old, corrupt practice that needs to stop!
Problem is they don’t know any better. The game will only improve when these incumbents are retired or removed!!!

"Money distorts the natural order, rendering a club’s level less significant than its paying power. “There are numerous examples I’m aware of in Yorkshire where clubs are paying considerable match fees at levels seven and eight – payments of £200-300,” Lewis continues. “I’ve seen players leave clubs for £20 more per game. It is crazy.”

When you've come up with a way of stopping cash payments, write it down and sell it to every inland revenue service on the planet - you'll be minted!

Until then accept it as a fact of life and just hope there are enough sensible people in rugby.
