So here we are and the first Saturday is in sight. The kids are back at school this week, the tourists are heading home, Moortown have cranked up their Insta account and Brid are sat at the airport looking for rugby players (actually, they've been relegated so whom cares).

Who's been signing?? Who lost players??

Who's fancied for the top? Who for the bottom??

On the basis that all clubs that come up seem to do well in the first half of the season my early tips are Wetherby and Bradford Salem.

Malton are always strong and Moortown normally fly early on.

As for Scarborough, no signings but lots of very promising kids coming of age...

Good luck everyone for an exciting season season.

Loving all rugby but especially at grassroots level.

The Goolies have lost a couple of players to Leeds Tykes. Scouted at the Yorkshire Cup final last season.
Can’t fault the lads to be honest  a chance to better themselves, hope it works out for them, but they’ll both we welcome back with open arms if not.

Both lads played in the back row, but we’re fairly stocked in the back row. They’ll be a massive loss but if we lost a couple more in other positions it would be harder felt.

Bradford Salem - Its their centenary year and it got off to a good start by thrashing Goole 52-21 in the Yorkshire Cup on Saturday. They may have money worries but seem to be looking strong for the season on the field. Coached by excellent Bob Hood who celebrates his 107th birthday this season.

Doncaster Phoenix – Although they lost their last preseason friendly, they are pleased that a number of colts are making a good showing in the 1st XV squad. All six of them played well.

Goole – as noted above Goole have lost a couple of players and suffered a heavy defeat in the Yorkshire Cup last weekend. Although not too much should be read into that. The loss of Selby from the league will rob them of a local derby.

Malton & Norton – It looks like Malton have had their usual successful preseason with training going well. They’ve also had to contend with some sadness to do with a RTA involving one of their younger senior players. Wishing him a speedy recovery.

Moortown – The MBH has been quiet over summer but with big plans for Bollywood celebrations after matches. They had a pre-season friendly planned for bank holiday weekend – although its not clear if it happened. They will be strong as ever.

Morley – They have lost both their preseason matches but against very good opposition in both cases. They only just lost out to Heath on Saturday. Morley don’t like being in this league and have always been higher up the structure – they will be fighting hard for promotion.

Old Brodleians – had some great months last season but then went off the boil quite a bit. Over the summer they have done a lot of work on their pitches and have made upgrades to the changing rooms. They have a new Director of Rugby. I’m sure their young team will do well again this season.

Old Crossleyans – Managed to stay up by the skin of their teeth last season (which was their centenary year). Their discipline really let them don last year so presumably they will have worked on that over summer. Its not clear if they have recruited.

Pontefract  - Seemed to get a bit of stick last year for problems with some supporters – no doubt that has been dealt with. They’ve played away at Dinnington pre-season. Will they be looking to consolidate or to bounce back up??

Rochdale – 2 and half hour drive from Scarborough. Loving the RFUs new local leagues.

Scarborough – steady as she goes.

Wetherby – What an achievement for Wetherby to reach this level. They always had a super youth setup but seemed to be settled at Y3 level. However I always thought that their location should allow them to move up the leagues (lots of players around there). Will they go straight up?

Really looking forward to our first season in regional leagues for Wetherby. First ever season at these giddy heights, first target for me has to be getting to that 50 league point mark to stay in the league. The bulk of our squad have come up through the juniors with many of them playing together since they were young kids which makes for a great atmosphere within the team and we still have some survivors from the colts teams that helped us drag ourselves back up from the depths of Y5.

No predictions from me as i have not seen most of the teams in this league.

We had a good pre season run out against selby with two close games with their 1s taking a 26-5 win and our 2s just nipping an even closer game with a 29-28.

Should be a great first saturday for the club with Ponty comming over with both 1s and 2s and also with the first team game being a double header for the Yorks Cup.

Looking forward to having a pint with my fellow old farts on the touchline over the season.

Shame we miss out on the local derby but always nice to see a club gain success through building a proper grass roots community club from the juniors upwards. It's a recipe much more likely to lead to lasting success compared to stuffing brown envelopes in kit bags until the cash tap is turned off and the mercenaries go be mercenary elsewhere.

We only played one season at Y3, back to back promotions in Y4 and Y3

Remind us again about how you've grown through you junior teams.

Not at all. Perhaps you know more about Pythons junior set up than the rest of us though.
