What an interesting day at Silver Royd! It’s not often the first game of the season draws such a big crowd, but today was an exception. It was great to see familiar faces from Bradford Salem, and it was also a pleasure catching up with Bob Hood, who remains as dedicated and enthusiastic about rugby as ever.

The win went to Bradford, who were particularly strong in certain positions, thanks in part to five or six powerful and talented professional rugby league players. Interestingly, we were told by the opposition that many of these players will be playing again tomorrow for their professional clubs, which makes for an intriguing setup.

Despite the loss, Scarborough played exceptionally well, with the four 17-year-old debutants especially standing out. Scabs displayed real cohesion, creating plenty of opportunities and scoring some great tries, which could have been enough to win the match on another day. However, today, the sheer power and individual brilliance of a few Bradford players made the difference.

If Bradford can keep this team together, they’ll undoubtedly be strong contenders for promotion. However, it seems like many of these players are temporary, so it’s unclear how long they’ll be around. On a perfectly flat pitch on such a beautiful day at Silver Royd, perhaps this wasn’t the ideal day to face them!

For those watching Bradford Bulls or Doncaster tomorrow, keep an eye on these players:

Morgan Mirzaali
Suaia Matagi
Pauli Pauli (not from The Sopranos!)
Adrea Vasuitoga
Watisoni Radaubale

In the end, it was a well-deserved victory for Bradford, but there’s no shame for Scarborough, who played very well.
The referee had a very challenging game to manage, but he handled it extremely well.

Wonderful work fiction BRB. Bulls and Doncaster will be surprised Morgan plays for them. As for Watisoni, you may want to lay off the red wine because he wasn’t even there.
An enjoyable afternoon none the less and a big thanks for the hospitality.

Good first win for Brods as Donny set out meaning business playing some nice slick rugby and going into an early 7-0 lead. Brods looked a bit shell-shocked but settled down and a charged down kick resulted in them following through with a converted try. Brods defence then tightened up and gradually started to get on top and went in at the break 21 - 7 in front. Playing up the slope in the second half again the Brods defence worked well limiting Phoenix to just one second half try and ran out convincing winners. Donny were far better than the score suggests and will be a force to be reckoned with in this league.

Salem with only two on the bench and one of them not actually there? Was there  a compulsory front row replacement?
Scarbs with the Name Witheld quads in their line-up.
Altogether a controversial start to the new season .

Anybody any idea how the RFU League table works? The top 4 all have 5 points with Salem top, Moortown 2nd, Brods 3rd & Rochdale 4th.

                                  P   W    D      L       PF    PA    +/-   TB    LB     Pts
1 Bradford Salem   1     1    0     0       41    30      11      1     0     5
2 Moortown            1     1     0     0       38    10      28      1     0     5
3 Old Brodleians     1   1     0     0       42    14        28      1     0    5
4 Rochdale              1    1     1      0       43    29      14      1     0    5

Brods & Rochdale both scored more points than Salem and both conceded less points so how can Salem be top? I know I'm a bit thick so what am i missing? Is it because Salem & Moortown were away and the other 2 at home? Weird.

I've now found the results on the RFU website. Interesting feature showing the teams. To confirm the 4 name withhelds on the Scarborough team sheet were the four 17 year olds.

Only two home wins which is unusual.

I am unreliably informed the top 4 league positions are given alphabetically. Let's hope there isn't a tie on points at the end of the season, but then that's the RFU for you..
