Cleck v Blaydon
Having seen both these teams in the flesh this season. Common sense would say a Blaydon away win would be on the cards.
But Cleck are normally a different animal on their own cabbage patch. It will be an interesting contest between the 12’s. If Blaydon can release their back three in the right areas, it will be a convincing away win. That said if they can’t it will be a closer affair. But still think Blaydon will shade it.
Driff v Selby
Driff went close last week with a few of the normal starting line up elsewhere, against a strong Scunny side in their own backyard. Selby will probably find this as a proper test at this level and will need to be at their best to keep within range of a Driff side who are always formidable opponents at home. Driff win.
Heath v Scunny
This would have been the tie of the weekend. But with Heath misfiring it maybe a good opportunity for Scunny to add this scalp to their early season collection. A close encounter I think. But high flying Scunny to take Heath close and probably just shade it. Scunny win
Huddersfield v York
Huddersfield after getting a win at home, may have gained some footing in this league.
York who have accumulated 3 wins from 3 will need be significantly better than they were at Blaydon, to win this game. Depending on the conditions, which will be a major factor in my view. Another away win for York, but I-think it will be close.
Ilkley v Sandal
Normally this would be a home win, with little doubt in my mind. But there would appear to be 2 Sandals out there. If the right one turns up, then a narrow Sandal win is on the cards and is my prediction for this game.
PP v Alnwick
Alnwick will need to find some form from somewhere to win this game. The local derby rivals PP have started relatively well at home, so I can’t go against a home win in this one.

Finally managed to get back into my account so will be contributing when I can.

Cleckheaton v Blaydon
Blaydon having picked up an early away win in the season seem to be full of it and ready to pick up a few more. Disappointing result against York by all accounts which could have been drawn or even won with the presence of a goal kicker... Blaydon
Driffield v Selby
Selby managed to go past Blaydon with relative ease, but Driffield at home are a different beast and seem to grind out some good results. I am predicting a close drawn affair with the Woldsmen taking narrow victory. Driffield.
Heath v Scunny
After the destruction of Heath at the hands of Sandal and a malfunctioning 'Meat Grinder' I can see Scunthorpe overcoming Heath especially with their current form.
Scunthorpe
Huddersfield v York
York are a well drilled side with a strong 9 and 10 who can control a game. Huddersfield seem to have found their feet, however I can't see York slipping up on the short trip to Huddersfield. York
Ilkley v Sandal
As Dark Arts mentioned usually this would be an easy home win. But Sandal seem to have a run of form at the early goings of the season and I can see this continuing. Sandal.
Percy Park v Alnwick
Alnwick don't seem to be the force they once were. After a drubbing at the hands of Blaydon and only 4 penalties to show for it, shows they're not offering much in terms of trys. I think Park will edge this - could be wrong. Percy Park

Week 4 and think we are starting to see the league take some shape and understanding where people are at

Cleckheaton vs Blaydon
Anyone who completely writes off Cleckheaton will be daft, such a hard team to breakdown at home. If they turn up they can stop the best teams in the league playing. Even with Blaydons win on the road last week think they will struggle this week.
Cleckheaton Win

Heath vs Scunthorpe
Injury worries for Heath showed in last weeks result. Scunthorpe look like they are building something impressive and will take some beating.
Scunthorpe Win

Huddersfield vs York
This was pencilled in as my early title deciding clash. If Huddersfield have woken up to how difficult this league will be to get out of they could really test York.
But think York will have to much for them in all aspects
York Win

Ilkley vs Sandal
Disappointing second half for Ilkley by all accounts, struggling against the “fat lads” off the bench at Percy Park. Well sandal have some bigger boned men of their own, to go with a dangerous backline.
Sandal Win.

Percy Park vs Alnwick
Could Percy Park be the next Blaydon? Difficult to beat at home but struggle on the road? Time will tell, but I think with confidence high and a down beat Alnwick they will put them to the sword
Percy Park

Driffield vs Selby
Selby have had 3 try bonus points in 3 games, and 2 narrow losses. So clearly like to play, and don’t roll over. So another tough test.
Driffield have looked better each week. And although last week’s result went against them they are worlds apart from the opening weekend against Percy Park.
Driffield Win

Cleckheaton v Blaydon - it’ll be a struggle, but I fancy Cleck to edge this, but only because they have home advantage and a proper pitch.

Heath v Scunthorpe - I imagine the Halifax Heavies will have been rattled by their shaky start to the season and Scunthorpe clearly mean business. Should be a great game and I’m going for a narrow home win.

Ilkley v Sandal - the Dalesmen will still be smarting at letting things slip in last week’s second half at Percy Park. The first half performance was excellent though and if they can reproduce that form for 80 minutes… Sandal have been a bit of a bogey team for me throughout my less than illustrious career and what a result they pulled off last week. Draw.

Huddersfield v York - should be a cracker. Hudds clearly not getting it all their own way and York in typically good early season form. I fancy an away win here.

Percy Park v Alnwick - assuming PP continue where they left off last week, a comfortable away win awaits them. If they reproduce their first half performance though, they’re doomed. Away win. Probably.

Driffield v Selby - this should be a belter ! Driffield coming good and Selby on the crest of a wave. Can’t back against Driff at home though, so a win for the Woldsmen.

The game at Kelleythorpe today always looked a one sided affair. If Driffield had been able to catch the final pass in the first 20 minutes they would have been out of site very early.

22-7 at half time and it was all Driffield traffic. Selby had issues stringing together phases, they looked dangerous moving the ball wide, but plenty of drop balls and handling errors kept applying some self inflicted pressure.

Driffield scored another 22 points after the break, and a wayward pass gave Selby and easy 7 points against the run of play.

Huddersfield result against York was the only shock result for me. But I don’t think anyone would have predicted the bottom 2 and top 2 after the first 4 games!

DAA quiet so far? Unexpected loss and not being able to field a second team! Steadman has got to work fast

Just got my phone back, thankfully.
If I had posted last night, it may well have been over the top.
I did mention that York had to play better than they did at Blaydon to win.
Well guess what they didn’t.
Nothing went right on the day.
Line out was shocking particularly in the first half.
York were fixated in carting the ball up the mid field, even when losing the gain line , time and again.
What ball that was recycled was slow and ponderous, with Atkin getting man and ball all day. Which put Huddersfield impressive mid field defense on the front foot, throughout.
Even with a numerical advantage for 30 minutes of the game (due to 3 yellow cards), it wasn’t until the last 5 minutes that York worked out the need to stretch the Huddersfield defense across the full width of the pitch, to get any reward. By then the game was lost.
Shackleton had an off day with his place kicking. Ironically had he landed them all, York would have snatched another away win. Which in fairness would have seen the better team on the day lose.
That said all though Huddersfield defense dominated most of the game, they had more than their share of good luck with two of the tries they scored. An interception and speculative kick over the top, which the bounce of the ball completely flat footed the covering York defenders only bounce straight into the grateful hands of the winger who had a relatively simple run in.
No complaints, York got exactly what they deserved from the game, which was nothing.
Plenty for the coaching staff to sort out, hopefully in time for next Fridays evening game at Clifton Park v Pontefract in the Yorkshire cup.

Poor fare on display at Stacks Field. Sandal were nowhere near as impressive as last week’s result suggested they should have been, but they had enough to blunt Ilkley’s attack.

Close till halftime, with Sandal scoring somewhat against the run of play then, nice backs try from Ilkley which should have levelled the score at 7-7, but the conversion missed.

Ilkley had a yellow and Sandal took advantage, kicking the goal to make it 5-10. Throwing the kitchen sink at the visitors was a tad risky and when a loose ball was hacked out of the Sandal 22, a wicked bounce allowed the winger to collect and go under the posts. And that was it.

The Dalesmen are not firing yet and with Ben Magee out another 4 weeks probably, a vital part of the attack is missing.

Next match is away at Scunny, though I’ll be in Hong Kong. Probably for the best !

It would be great if we had a second team to enter into a league. I’m not alone at York, worrying about the dramatic drop off in numbers.

Ilkley had a third XV travel to Ribb today. We’re lucky, as the game is dying I’m afraid.

Master (not up to speed) Knowledge are you not aware of the RFUs latest attempt to allow/force second XVs into the league system. It will surely be the death knell for many grass roots sides with only one team and IMHO result in many more walkovers as could you reasonably expect say Brid seconds to travel to say North Ribb when their 1ST XV are away at Wath. No joined up thinking here, just more ill thought out impositions from the powers in charge. More localised fixtures are, I think, the way forward to keep clubs second teams going. Not the opposite.

They can't. They don't qualify.

Have a look at the league results in the two Southern Divisions. Walkover central.
