Has anyone encountered any challenges relating to shirt sponsorship by alcoholic beverage suppliers, such as breweries and the use of their brand logos on kit?

I'm interested to know why it would be challenged considering how the breweries have sponsered the game for so long.

The contents of my playing shirt were self funded by several breweries for many seasons :)

Thanks folks, my thoughts concur and having looked up the useful information on financing clubs on England Rugby website see nothing other than sponsors being in keeping with game and club values etc. We have a new marketing person who is a bit PC and I wanted to clear the way for another 60 year shirt sponsorship deal with Theakston's!

I think in this day and age to be able to get partnerships with big companies like Theakstons (yourselves) or Timothy Taylors (Keighley) you take the money and run! Unless Theakstons are sticking a crate of Old Peculier in the changing room whenever the under 12's win I don't see how anyone would have an issue with them as sponsors.

Brewery "sponsorship" is often far from genuine sponsorship; it's typically an advance of discount loan disguised as a sponsorship deal.

In reality, they benefit from having their logo on your shirts while effectively charging you hidden interest and giving you your own money back.

Some may insist, "Our case is different—it's real sponsorship!" While that might be true, it's rarely the case. To find out for sure, challenge the brewery. Let them know you're considering switching suppliers and ask them to provide their best price for supply only, based on your barrelage. Compare the total value of that offer to your current sponsorship deal to see the true benefit.

In respect of your general question, at Scarborough we choose not to have drinks advertising on any shirts and are just removing the old Heineken post protectors from the lower fields where the kids play. We're not madly against it but I asked for them to be replaced as I didn't think it was consistent with our youth rugby values.

Thanks Andy and fair points BRB, hence my asking the question the first place. Looks like Scabs and North Ribb are poles apart in their youth policy and values then! ;)

Are you also going to stop serving alcohol in the bar? God forbid a youth player sees someone buying a pint

Awkward when their MoM a couple of weeks ago was presented with a bottle of port.

Was the bottle of port presented to a youth player from a youth team?? Come on Stella, at least make an effort to offer a coherent point.

Like I said we're not madly against it but as we are able to limit youth exposure then we do.

If there was no other option then we would accept brewery "sponsorship" but we are lucky that for the youth teams we don't need to.

In respect to the values of North Ribb and Scarborough, I'd say they are pretty identical. What differs is our circumstances.

Obviously not. I commentedon it because it kind of goes against your earlier comments.
And no, i don't have an issue with it. Lad can do with the bottle however he chooses.
