Can't argue with the lineout not straight if uncontested item - been banging on about that for a decade or more. You heard it here first folks!

But teams stop competing when they know it's being fed/not straight.

I think the current card system is fit for purpose and watering it down will reduce the deterrent effect. If changed, one could end up with situations where cynically "taking a card" for tactical reasons could be used and perpetrators of offences be back in the game after achieving their objective.

“But teams stop competing when they know it's being fed/not straight.“

At scrums that’s probably true, as most refs nowadays let it be put into the second row.

Lineouts are different, where one millimetre off centre gets blown. That should encourage competition. If a side chooses not to compete then why does arrow straightness matter?

That's the point, a lot of the time the line out isn't straight/down the middle

Re lineouts - what is the definition of "compete"? If say prop at the front sticks up her arm, is that a "compete"? An unlimited jumper at the back nowhere near the ball? A lifted no 2 jumper who gives up as the ball sails over his head? Will be interesting to see the guidance on this.

Dear Naz

Common sense should indicate what "competing" means.

However, in the absence of common sense, the dictionary definition is as follows:

"To strive to gain or win something by defeating or establishing superiority over others:"

Sticking a hand up / giving up etc as you describe cannot be classed as competing.

Hope this helps.
