No league activity this coming weekend but maybe some cup games or friendlies. Ripon have drawn Redcar in Yorkshire Shield. Anyone else up to much?

I predict a raft of walkovers and for some teams 2nd XV’s that have been struggling so far to magically have a good performance this week.

Baildon have given us an away walkover for Saturday in the shield citing injuries and unavailability which is fair enough. I agree with previous comment and expect several walkovers to be announced in the next few days.

Shocking and sad indictment for the priority of the game these days.

Two of the semi finalists in the Silver trophy have already given walkovers in the League

Darnit, Redcar have just blobbed on the Ripon match for Saturday. Let's see how far they get on byes or W/Os?

That was almost a racing cert. They don't travel for cup matches.

From my recollection of two seasons ago, they're not too hot at home either.

A return to 14 team leagues is the best way of sustaining clubs. I have said it before and will keep on saying it. Cup comps despite their tradition seem to have had their day.

I agree Flaggy the current model doesn't satisfy a lot of us as far as the structured season is concerned, travel costs and bar profits not least of our worries. What's not to love about cup competitions though?

Harking back to the good old days, cup games were played on Sundays (In the Midlands at least) and Saturday matches had to be fulfilled. The only dispensation was the day before the final was excused. I think if a club had a decent cup run, some light hearted games over the Christmas period and perhaps a four game Easter weekend tour, we could pack in between 30 - 35 games a season. Apart from the arthritis and cirrhosis of the liver, it didn't do me any harm!

After much to-ing and fro-ing, Ripon have two teams out v Harrogate Georgians and Pocklington 2nds, both away and Ripon happy to travel! Looking forward to the challenges and providing a decent game of rugby hopefully for everyone concerned.
