Cracking day at Silver Royd. As expected a big crowd and a lovely day.

Rochdale backs are a thing to behold with gas to burn - its clear why they have scored so many points and won all their matches. However its also clear why they have conceded so many points as a team with a little bit of a soft underbelly.

Scarborough were too powerful for Rochdale today and played more as a XV. If two 'tries' hadn't been ruled as held up and two other gilt edged chances not gone begging it could have been 50+ to the home side.

Assuming the wet grounds don't slow them down, I still think Rochdale will in the hunt for the top two spots at the end of the season - their 10 and back three are class acts.

Well refed and a good spirited match. All the yellow card for technical offences.

Really happy with the Scarborough performance today, every player contributed to a fine win.

Looks like the bottom four are dropping off a bit and whilst there's a very long way to go they will want to avoid being down there much longer.

9.   Malton and Norton      8
10.   Old Crossleyans         8
11.   Doncaster Phoenix      6
12.   Goole                        4

The other 8 clubs all still in it.

Scarborough the deserved winners today in what was a fabulous display of Yorkshire rugby.

Goole getting closer and closer to a decent result.  Surely an upset on the cards soon?

What’s happening to moortown? Have the £££ dried up or are Salem just overspending?

Wetherby made hard work of it today vs a determined Goole outfit. The flow of the game was spoiled by a high penalty count from both sides.

Wetherby scrum will take some beating & once their backs start to click I think they have a lot of potential to cause some upsets.

Goole showed flashes of what they can do, good in the lineout & not the easiest to put away.

It absolutely baffles me why some of the lads are at Bradford salem….

How can one lad go from playing 24 games in the 2024 super league season for Huddersfield Giants to playing for Bradford Salem at level 6…..

SEBASTINE IKAHIHIFO

If they get promoted this year I think it’s fair to say it’s pretty obvious why given the amount of “appearances” they have in the NRL and Super League.

As one of their lads said today and I quote “We don’t pay players” must have been the most comical thing to have happened today at Salem.

What kind of club are they going to have once these players stop playing…

Personally I feel sorry for the lads that are from Bradford Salem and try push for their 1st XV spot just to be pushed a side for a professional rugby league player.

Everyone has their own views and each to their own but I suppose money talks especially when the club is in ALOT of debt.

I heard it was £200-500 a game.. But again could be rumours : )

At least 6 of the players on the $alem teamsheet today will have received brown envelopes.
I believe the player mentioned above is heading overseas anyway so unlikely to be seen in a salem shirt again.
Although Pauli Pauli must be due back off his holidays soon!

There seems to be a huge gulf between their 1s and 2's.
Salem have managed to field a 2nd XV a few times this year but the results haven't been great.
Certainly not a club that have the natural progression from 2s to 1s. It would seem if they lose a player they just buy in another.

I accept it's perfectly within the regulations to pay players (as long as the payments are properly declared and processed through PAYE - I know a club local to Salem are considering having this conversation with HMRC as they have their doubts).

However I have genuine safety concerns. We are a level 6 club,. playing ina level 6 league. Players train and are conditioned to play in a level 6 environment. This season we have been delighted that four seventeen year olds have made their way from the colts to the 1st XV and enjoyed debutes and excellent performances.

Again though, these are colts who have been brought up in a level 6 environment, they have carefully and gradually become accustomed to level 6 senior training and physicality.

Then suddenly in their first match they were playing against professional rugby league players who are in turn conditioned to be playing against and hitting other full-time professionals on a weekly basis.

So all I would say to whoever's ego is being massaged by these recruitments and whatever you are trying to make up for what is lacking elsewhere in your life/club - just have a very long hard think about what you are doing and if it's in the best interests of your club and rugby in general.

Just think how much rugby development or ground improvements you could do with that money you are throwing away each week.

BUT, like I said, you are not breaking the rules and therefore it's your choice if you choose to continue.

(Finally - In fairness the recruited players who played at Scarborough were very humble off the pitch and lovely blokes. They seemed a bit embarrassed at where they found themselves playing)

After watching them last week, I'd be interested to know which 6? There are a couple of obvious ones, however it's always easy to assume any 'good player' is being paid.
There are always a sprinkling of higher level players further down the leagues, but only now are people suggesting it's a safety issue? Was this the case when Kylie leuluai played at Moortown, for example, or just because BS are going well?

I went to Scarborough today, and totally agree , Scarborough were well worth the win and played some excellent rugby. Great advert for the game

What a fantastic game at Silver Royd yesterday. Rochdale probably expected a sterner test but were no doubt confident of a bp win. They soon learned that it was going to be a real challenge to their hitherto dominant performances. Scarborough played the best I have seen a long time and it was a real team performance. Their defence was excellent, so much so they mostly prevented Rochdale’s vaunted backs from creating many opportunities. In attack Scarborough got the better of Rochdale’s pack and made good ground often putting several phases together and gaining significant territory allowing scoring opportunities which when in the 22 were taken well. Evan Govier was an inspired pick at centre and was my man of the match however that accolade could have just about gone to any of the home team.
When Rochdale had the chances out wide they used their pace well and I can see how the have scored so many tries in other games. It’ll be interesting to see how the go on when faced with muddy winter conditions and a fit but slightly lightweight pack.
Ref seemed determined not to appear influenced by our large partisan crowd but went a bit too far the other way for my liking.
Disappointed with the Rochdale coach who seem more interested in having Scarborough players sent off than coaching his own side and didn’t have the grace to applaud either team at the final whistle. Thought Rochdale looked a good set of lads and played in the right spirit but looked genuine utter at the end. Congratulations to both sides for a very entertaining game

Watched the game at Ponte, which was closely fought and could have gone either way.

I thought that there was too much whistle and not enough advantage, ref was probably being assessed.
It was difficult for either team to get any real 'flow' in their game as a consequence.

Additionally the set piece became a lottery, the ref applied the laws in a way that contradicted the way other refs have done do this season.

Finally it was a game played in a good spirit, it probably didn't need the 8/9 Yellow Cards, particularly as with a little consistency there could have been a dozen easily.

I just don’t understand why it isn’t being spoken about more. It’s clear Salem are paying players, how much is up for debate but a simple google search of the team sheet on a weekly basis will make it obvious it’s not cheap.

On the other hand they have then set up a Go Fund Me page to help cover £110k worth of debt not limited to various unpaid utility bills.

It’s simply disgusting. Asking members and the local community to donate hard earned money to the club whilst they chuck brown envelopes at any rugby league vet who will pick up the phone.

Add to that a few weeks ago during a club meeting the club forced the junior section to transfer their entire bank balance to the senior section 🤯

Why do Salem get a free pass? Are Handsy Andy and his merry men untouchable and free of criticism?

I just cannot get my head around the entire situation. “Mental”

Interesting. If your information is genuine then it is disturbing. I would totally agree that paying players whilst in debt and setting up a ‘just giving’ page is pretty poor form. Not sure what their reasoning or strategy is.
