20 points to play for
« on: March 16, 2015, 11:19:50 AM »
With just four games to go, it's getting tense at the top and bottom. I'd say Alnwick are just about safe now after a good performance at Rochdale, which leaves two from the next five below to go down...

Driffield at 9th with 50 points have the top three to play, albeit at home to both both Sheffield and Ilkley, with an away trip to Rochdale sandwiched between. I think they'll win one of these and take 5 at Horden, increasing their points to 60 and safety.

West Hartlepool at 10th on 48 points have three tricky away fixtures at Hills, the Bees and Sheffield and an equally tough home one against Percy Park. Difficult to see them getting more than 5 points from these on current form , leaving them with 53 points and facing the drop.

Northern at 11th with 43 points should fare better, with Rochdale and Horden at home, but they won't like the thought of Ilkley away and then finishing at Alnwick. They need 10 points just to gain parity with W. Hartlepool and even if they get them, the number of wins could decide it - in this case, it'd be Northern to go on points difference.

Bees at 12th on 42 points have the easiest of the runs-in, with three home matches - Alnwick, West Hartepool and Dinnington. The one away match is at Hills. I can see them winning all of these, the thought of having to play Bradford Salem next season acting as the main spur. 17 out of 20 and safety with 59 points.

Finally, 13th placed Crocs on 35 points. Of the five clubs featured here, the best losing performers at Ilkley and victors over Sheffield. Home to Ilkley first and then Horden away - 6 points from these two ? Alnwick at home and Hills away - another 8 perhaps, if they can fire on all cylinders. Still not enough though, ending with 49.

In conclusion, Crocs and Northern to join Horden

Crocs have always had an astonishing ability to escape the drop. They are usually in trouble around this time of year.

True, but they do seem a long way behind. Getting 14 points would be a great achievement, but still probably not enough.

Last year they ended up with 61 points, comfortably staying up, but in their last 4 matches they lost 2 and drew 2, thus getting only 4 points from the 20 on offer.

Why would playing Bradford Salem be such a bad thing? Apart from the obvious of no body wants to lose to their local rivals.

A quote from the Bees' match report after they lost at home to Ilkley...

BRADFORD Salem v Bradford & Bingley – a fixture that was unthinkable in 2006-07 when the Bees were in National League Two (third tier) and the Heaton club in Yorkshire Division One (seventh tier) is looming closer.

While the Shay Laners seem a promotion banker in Yorkshire Division Two, it is still more open to conjecture as to whether the Bees will be relegated for a second straight season.

If Bees survive this year wonder what they will be like next year? rumour has it 4/5 first team regulars leaving, maybe a few retiring also. Going down to Yorkshire One may not be such a bad thing!

They're still infighting over the last one.
