Seven-a-side rugby is a young mans game, and student invitation side,Rogue Traders, overcame Bishop Burton College in an absorbing final towin the 53rd Guinness Pock 7s on Good Friday. It was a record breaking day as a bumper crowd basked in the BankHoliday sunshine and enjoyed an afternoon of eight hours of qualityrugby. Rogue Traders, an invitation side of former Sedbergh studentswho took their name from the theme tune of the Hong Kong Sevens, certainly did it the hard way. They knocked out the holders and sevensspecialists, Ronin, in their first game with a sudden death winnerafter the sides had been locked at 24-24 at full-time. They then had towork hard, but made more cvomfortable progress, to overcome North Eastside, KS Crusaders, and Old Hymerians, before meeting Bishop BurtonCollege in the final. Bishop Burton had put aside the local challenge by beating Pocklington,Driffield and Malton & Norton before knocking out Catterick Garrison's teamof Fijians in their semi final. Bishop Burton raced into a 12-0 earlylead in the final but Rogue Traders hung in and their surer handlingwas the difference as they turned the tables to pull away to win 36-17. The Plate Competition produced an equally exciting finale as Ronin alsowent two tries up but were gradually reeled in by determined hosts,Pocklington. Three opportunist scores got Pocklington back on terms andPocklington's committment shone through in the second half as theystormed to victory by 43-21.
The women also got in on the seven-a-side act and their mini tournmentat the start of the day saw Doncaster overcome Pocklington and Hull totake the honours.
