Plenty of precedent for ref's decisions on the day subsequently being "upgraded".
And then, of course, there's the law of the land. Rugby players all accept a degree of injury risk through accidental contact or contact within the laws of the game. Anything outside that and deliberate could become ABH or GBH depending on the injury inflicted. Decision to take any such action should be the injured player's to make, not club blazers.
