Bad form would have been crying off and York missing out on gate money/bar revenue. Kudos to Cleck for fulfilling the fixture where the majority of teams pulled out it seems! I hear the York coach was very happy before the game that they were uncontested as he was playing hooker

I agree, great to see clubs doing what they can to get games played!!

Got to agree - solution to non-participation in cup competitions and teams unwilling to travel seems to be more cup games and travelling further.

Decreasing playing numbers is a massive issue. Here's an idea - scrap merit tables. No points at stake, just an opportunity for 30 odd players to run around with their mates before a few shandies with just an occasional bus trip. You can play local teams rather than anywhere in god's county and give novices a chance to get involved without the pressure of the 3rdXV dropping from 5th to 6th in a Yorkshire merit 2 east south west A.

Interested in thoughts on this?

I personally am a huge fan of the merit leagues and when I played in them I loved looking at the league table and how many points we had etc. It gave the game extra meaning.

Now I’m running Sandal Socials 4 points on a Saturday are irrelevant and that is about getting matches played.

There have been many initiatives to try and get more games played but it’s a hard thing to fix.

One of the issues is pressure from the clubs first team specifically surrounding front rows. Props and hookers can be like gold dust.

Are the cups irrelevant/had their day? I’m not sure, it would certainly be a shame if they are.

There’s a lot of good in the junior game of RL and because of this the game will keep going. I have seen juniors coached at league and union and the core skills from league players aged 11-16 far outshine those of their union counterparts. Yes it has issues and one of them is that the sport can not demonstrate enough good quality games on TV. There’s too many dead rubbers that are on TV and this is because the amount of quality is lacking.

The England backline yesterfay should have been allowed to cut free and have a real go from the off. However test match rugby is about winning so they got the job done.

Unfortunately our opposition have pulled out of Saturday. If any like minded team fancy a game please get in touch.

If it can be at Sandal that would be great as everything is arranged for a home game.

DM me on here or text 07841 401875

Thanks

The tournament is a week today and if you’re interested check the website out. It’s always a good afternoon and it’s growing each year and becoming a good tournament.

Clubs have had them for a week or so and have another week I think to accept them or ask for a transfer I think. I expect them to be realised officially end of June start of July.

Just out of interest if someone was to make that commute to train and play surely they won’t be expected to train twice a week?? That’s a awful drive in rush hour even if your in South Yorkshire to start with!! Maybe this is the reason why I’ve never made it as a player ????????????
