Title: Predictions & Chat 02.05.26
Post by: gateprop on Apr 29, 2026, 01:52 PM
A few sides involved in league or cup action this week. Hullensians need to take just 1 point from their game to avoid relegation. Yarnbury need to beat Goole to overtake them in 3rd place. Cup games and post regular season fixtures are always an absolute lottery in terms of player availability so anything could happen!

Yorkshire Shield Semi Final
Harrogate Pythons v Ripon
(Wednesday 7.30pm @ West Park Bramhope)

Counties One Yorkshire
West Leeds v Hullensians
Yarnbury v Goole

Counties One North Plate Quarter Final
New Brighton v Wath upon Dearne

Pythons 53 - 33 Ripon

Ripon started well and finished well but not enough. For me there is a big difference between Y1 and Y2 and that showed in the end. Looking forward now to a difficult final against Wath on 23rd May

Congratulations to Pythons for the emphatic win and all the best for the final.

A testing game for Ripon in terms of converting steady first phase possession into fast attacking play. That's where Pythons were at their best and most clinical. A big difference in pace to and at the breakdown showed the gulf between Y1 and Y2 in terms of physicality and game management.

Ripon did their best under the circumstances and had their two best players not been injured and removed after just 20 minutes, might things have been different? Who knows but would have made for a lesser points margin at least.

Cheers to Gaters and all the best for the final and next season.

I'm not sure the gap is as big as some make out, teams tend to be a bit bigger and more organised but in the last couple of seasons sides promoted from Y2 have been promoted again; North Ribb and Dinno. It's also rare for a promoted team to be relegated the following season; I really thought Yawno would struggle but they've finished top four and teams like Pythons have become stalwarts of the league.

Maybe it's because we had back to back promotions and Yorkshire One caught up with us then. I feel like in Y1 pretty much every side is fitter, more organised, has a better set piece and is a lot more clinical than you get at Y2.
