Title: Playoffs
Post by: BishBashBosh on May 02, 2026, 04:57 PM
After causing an upset last week taking Alnwicks unbeaten home record, Gate went to Anselmainans and took their unbeaten home record too (40-41).

On to Rossendale next and a return to Marls Pitts

Not sure how many from rowers we'll have left for the game though

Much as I dislike these play-offs, hats off to Harrogate for two outstanding results away from home. If they beat Rossendale away too, they really will have earned the right to be back where they believe they belong. Well done.

Having spent a weekend at Harrogate it was very interesting to hear the views of Harrogate club members regarding a number of things.

Not all is well in paradise!

Gate do it the hardest way possible and beat Rossendale 21-14 to take a place in Nat 2 next season!

Unbelievable Jeff!

Can't argue against any team winning 3 away games in the playoffs offs deserving to go up!

Congratulations to Harrogate. Three away wins deserve to be promoted. Might be a chance of us at Ribb meeting some of you guys already in exalted company next year as I suppose Kendal will go back West as well as Rossendale. Lets see as we know we cant forsee the RFUs thinking. In a perverse way we might have more travel in terms of miles in NE1 but we could drastically reduce our travel costs by using trains several times and renew some long standing acquaintances which would be great. Lets see and not pre-empt anything.
Good luck to all.

York squeezed past Pocklington at Clifton Park Cricket club today.
Although I'm told it was a lot closer than it need to be as York were denied a number of penalty tries.
A lot of rebuilding to be done for next season, but congrats to the boys and Bassey for getting through a tough season and staying in the league.

You're not denied anything if the Match Officials see it different to the myopic crowd.

A very small myopic crowd by the sounds of it.

Apparently Pock out number York 2 to 1.

Whereas Scarborough outnumbered Pock (at Pock) 3 to 1.

Anyhow bad luck Pock...no doubt you'll be favourites for promotion next year along with Morley.

How have you managed to talk entirely about Ribb on a thread earmarked play offs. That's unbelievable, Jeff!

oh, thanks for the guidance AVS. A bit like paying a lot of rugby league players to play a Yorkshire rugby union club you mean?

Congratulations to Harrogate battling through this dreary new format. Deserved champions. But I fear they will be back in R1NE after next season, unless they recruit heavily.

Speaking of which, I noticed Heath have signed some players from the lower leagues. A bold and confusing strategy. Surely the money should be spent on some players with National League experience?

Congratulations also to York for securing their place in R1NE next season. I went to watch the game and saw they had another 'off day', missing some regular players too. 5 missed kicks from York makes the score closer than it should have been.

Well fought Pocklington, they will certainly be up amongst the leaders next season, if they manage to retain their players.

As I alluded to a couple of weeks ago after the Pock v Morley game, if either side want to progress they will need to know how to use the ball.

From what I've heard it's why York have struggled too. Very big and aggressive but it takes a lot more effort bash your way to the line as it does to glide your way over.

I think you will find the league above BRB a bit harder than you candyfloss eating donkey wallopers currently believe!

Not at all....as I've said repeatedly survival is our objective.

Although I'm not sure how your little fishing expedition relates to my comment that creativity in rugby leads to points?....but then you were a beat Bobby so analysis isn't you strong point ...

A great achievement by Harrogate, winning three difficult away matches, though having finished 9 points and two wins behind Alnwick, there should have been no need for a play-off : Alnwick should have played Anselmians for the right to be promoted and Rossendale should have been relegated automatically.

Similarly, there was no need for the York v Boro match - a simple two up/two down would have sufficed.

And 14 team leagues of course.

So nearly let a compliment slip through on it's own....
Everyone knew the playoffs from the start, so it shouldn't be a surprise

Why not 4 down from Nat 2 and 2 up from both leagues? Everyone will have their preferred option, but it does make the league enjoyable right until the end of the season. A lot of teams had something to play for going into the last few games, compared to the previous seasons where teams are just playing out games until the season finishes.

Only really Sandal, Driffield, Heath & Cleck didn't have too much to play for for the last 3-4 games

Oh, it was a compliment - a great achievement indeed - but the point I was making is that I feel the league should have 14 teams, in which case there would be no need for any play-offs, apart from those two teams finishing 2nd in NE1 and NW1. Or indeed, as you suggest, relegate 4 teams from Nat 2 and dispense with play-offs altogether.

In professional football,play-offs exist to make money, but that is not the case at Lever 5 RU. I wonder how much extra 'gate p[aid for those three away games.

x3 coach trips, x3 physio cover, probably x3 sets of match fees and a truck load of beer to celebrate!

Although back in the day there was no payment for cup games and everyone still played in those regardless of being paid or not.

Maybe the same for the playoffs this time - who knows
